POSITION SUMMARY:

This position fulfills critical roles for the libraries Assessment Programs & Collection Strategy and Research Impact departments, which works collaboratively across the libraries and campus to provide data findings to guide the collection activities that provide outstanding information resources to support teaching, research, and public service needs, as well as helping researchers express how their work impacts the University, profession, and larger community. The Collections Data Analyst oversees the collection and management of data related to the Libraries' physical and electronic collections. The position's work provides the data, analyses, and tools needed to make informed collection decisions, which account for more than 12 million dollars of spending annually. The Collections Data Analyst designs and develops research methods, tools, and applications to improve data management, collection, and reporting; performs data analyses; interprets results across data sets and provides recommendations to subject matter experts; organizes results in different formats for different reporting and audience needs; and develops and delivers training for others to assist in data analysis projects.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Data Collection and Management

  • Oversees the collection and management of data representing the quantitative use and value of the Libraries' collections in all formats. This includes usage data for electronic resources across more than 100 different platforms, physical usage data from the Libraries' integrated library system, citation data from citation databases, and publication data from research management databases.

  • Investigates and determines the best way to resolve complex data management issues with data harvested from a variety of sources.

  • Identifies and resolves errors in the data and data collection processes and initiates and performs data audits to maintain data integrity.

  • Develops and implements tools and methods for automated data collection to streamline data gathering processes.

  • Develops and manages databases for raw data storage and backup access.

  • Evaluates current and future data collection and management needs and determines the best way to meet those needs.

  • Investigates, recommends, and implements processes to collect and manage new data as accreditation reporting and international collection data standards change.

  • Stays abreast of changes to international standards for electronic collection data, SUSHI, and other protocols, and implements and communicates related changes to others within the Libraries.

  • Documents processes and creates procedures for workflows.

  • Data Analysis and Reporting

  • Performs complex data analysis using advanced modeling methods to answer questions about the use and value of resources.

  • Identifies appropriate data points for collection evaluations with little guidance.

  • Creates collection profiles for subject area reporting needs.

  • Identifies strengths and analyzes gaps for different parts of the collection.

  • Synthesizes data from multiple data sets, interprets results, and makes recommendations to department colleagues and subject liaisons.

  • Organizes results and findings to effectively communicate with audiences in and outside of the Libraries.

  • Plans, designs, and produces customized reports from a variety of data sources for a variety of needs.

  • Investigates and recommends the best ways to resolve complex data analysis and reporting issues.

  • Trains and manages graduate students

  • Develops and delivers training.

  • Assigns and manages projects.

  • Provides work direction.

  • Other duties as assigned

  • Develops and maintains two-way communication with vendors for troubleshooting issues, keeping abreast of changing standards and procedures, and ascertaining necessary information in a timely manner related to data.

  • Develops and/or manages individual projects as necessary, which includes planning, creating project timelines, coordinating staff and students across departments, managing progress, and communicating results.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Computer Science, Science, or related fields with at least two years of experience related to managing and analyzing datasets, or equivalent combination of education, training, and work experience totaling 6 years.

  • Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis without need now or in the future for sponsorship for employment visa status.

  • Knowledge of advanced research methods, statistical techniques, and quantitative methodology.

  • Knowledge and an understanding of multiple complex systems from which data are derived.

  • Ability to utilize standard statistical software.

  • Ability to train, direct, and evaluate the work of others.

  • Ability to present findings in a logical manner.

  • Preferred

  • Master's Degree in Business, Computer Science, Information Sciences, or related fields

  • Supervisory experience

  • Preferred Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Knowledge of integrated library systems and library discovery systems.

  • Knowledge of COUNTER Code of Practice.

  • Knowledge of SUSHI protocol.

  • Knowledge of library databases.

  • Knowledge of bibliographic records.
