The Coding Supervisor is responsible for supervising internal coding staff and processes to meet team and department goals. Promote customer satisfaction, both internal and external. Carry out supervisor responsibilities in accordance with organization policies, procedures, and applicable laws. Responsible for driving all KPI metrics. Also oversees workflow, training, and verifying the accuracy of their team's work. The position provides operational guidance and counseling on routine issues to ensure that the daily work of the team is completed accurately and on time.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Function as a work leader, providing operational support, training of staff, and conducting audits on work quality.

  • Assess, process, and oversee workflow.

  • Monitor employee work schedules and plan for special projects and time off requests.

  • Perform missed punches and monitor for possible abuse.

  • Monitor employees' daily performance and productivity. Utilize processes and available tools to analyze trends, maintain and enhance performance, and report statistics.

  • Conduct weekly team meetings. Attend applicable department/management meetings. Keep team informed of new processes and general updates.

  • Manage and track payor audit requests.

  • Manage correspondence, escalated issues, and requirements/regulations.

  • Review and approve assigned work; maintain records on individual performance and attendance.

  • Assist with development and distribution of policies and processes.

  • Implement payor specific coding changes.

  • Determine impact of changes to payor policies and regulations.

  • Mentor, coach, and address developmental opportunities and disciplinary issues on the team. Implement corrective action and further development plans as necessary. Use motivational techniques to assist team members in maintaining and exceeding standards.

  • Demonstrate accelerated knowledge of system(s) functions as it effects daily work flow and team/department business processes.

  • In partnership with Manager, oversee team recruiting, training, and performance evaluations.

  • Work collaboratively to problem solve and participate cross functionally with other teams as necessary.

  • Act as first point of contact on technical, procedural, and policy questions.

  • Respond to customer concerns and questions, as applicable.

  • Conduct research and implement solutions to resolve customer issues, complex problems, and department efficiencies.

  • Expertise in coding/billing requirements for government and insurance carriers.

  • Demonstrate ability to identify and recognize issues and provide unique, exception-based, workable resolutions.


  • Must be a certified coder (CPC preferred).

  • Four Year Degree or equivalent work experience.

  • Five years of relevant work experience in a leadership role equivalent to lead or supervisor, preferably in healthcare billing environment.

  • Extensive knowledge of pathology coding rules for CPT, ICD and modifiers.

  • Knowledge of Revenue Cycle Management functions and processes.

  • Proficient in 10 key and alpha/numeric data entry.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Word, Excel, Outlook, and general working knowledge of Internet for business use.

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline driven environment.

  • Demonstrated leadership and interpersonal skills.

Responsibilities Essential Duties and Responsibilities: • Performs billing audits to investigate and monitor compliance with federal and state laws and regulations, Medicare and Medicaid laws and regulations, current coding and billing guidelines. • Utilize analytic technology tool to identify risk to identify risk for areas identified in Evaluation & Management (E&M) and procedure coding, modifiers, time/RVU, and other risk identified by compliance and Office of Inspector General (OIG). • Demonstrate detailed knowledge of 1995 & 1997 Evaluation and Management Documentation Guidelines. • Analyze analytic reports for E&M and procedural coding and overall coding review findings indicating recommendations and actions taken to improve documentation and coding accuracy. • Prepares reports of audit findings and identify coding errors. • Demonstrate strong communication skills both written and verbal. • Demonstrate strong presentation skills for conducting individual and group training sessions. • Review medical record documentation to identify services provided by physicians and mid-level providers as it pertains to claims that are being filed. • Ability to create training and educational material on coding and documentation. • Oversee and monitor billing based on industry rules and regulations, including, local, state, and federal regulations, regarding billing and collection practices. • Research and resolve general and complex coding issues. • Ability to provide guidance and training to providers and billing staff in area of coding and documentation. • Participates with special assigned projects. • Maintains professional growth by participating in educational programs and professional organizations and activities to maintain knowledge of current trends, practices and developments. • Performs all other related duties as assigned.
