Job Summary Reviews and evaluates hospital inpatient medical record documentation to assign, sequence, edit and/or validate the appropriate ICD-10-CM and ICD-10- PCS codes. Performs coding and/or code/DRG validation across multiple entities. Applies all appropriate coding guidelines and criteria for code selections. Adheres to Company and HSC Coding Compliance policies and procedures for the assignment of complete, accurate, timely, and consistent codes for diagnoses and procedures.

Duties (included but not limited to):

  • Assigns, sequences, validates, and/or edits codes/DRGs and abstracted data (e.g., physician, discharge disposition, query tracking) for inpatient records for multiple facilities using ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS to include:

o Diagnosis description with appropriate 3-7 digit code assignment with corresponding Present On Admission (POA)

o Procedure description with appropriate 7 digit ICD-10-PCS code, date and surgeon

o Admitting Diagnosis

o Discharge disposition

o Where applicable, completes the coding portion of the IRF-PAI

  • Maintains or exceeds established accuracy standards

  • Maintains or exceeds established productivity standards

  • Utilizes the complete patient medical record documentation in code/DRG assignment, validation, and/or editing of codes/DRGs

  • Initiates, reviews, and/or edits physician queries in compliance with Company and HSC policy where appropriate

  • As needed, may periodically be asked to perform Coding Account Resolution Specialist III (CARS III) duties

  • Reviews all official data quality standards, coding guidelines, Company policies and procedures, and clinical/medical resources to assure coding knowledge and skills remain current

  • Follows all applicable coding guidance in assigning, sequencing, validation, and/or editing of codes/DRGs

  • Meets all educational requirements as stated in current Company and HSC policy

  • Practice and adhere to the "Code of Conduct" philosophy and "Mission and Value Statement"

  • Other duties as assigned


  • Coding Technical Skills - ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, MS-DRGs, APR DRGs, and POA Assignment.

High School graduate or GED equivalent required, undergraduate (associates or bachelors) degree in HIM/HIT preferred.


Minimum 1 year of acute care hospital inpatient coding required, 3 years preferred.

Oversee desktop and network related projects involving design, installation, implementation, and monitoring. Provide hardware and software support of all agency equipment including workstations, servers, printers, multi-function devices and network related equipment. Perform desktop and network reviews and performance monitoring. Perform research, testing, implementation, and documentation of technological solutions or enhancements. Perform vendor compliance monitoring. Provide technical trainings and staff supervision. Work under limited supervision with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.Essential Job Functions: Expected to attend work on a regular and consistent schedule in accordance with agency policy. Available to work afterhours and weekends to include some holidays when work duty dictates afterhours support such as network equipment upgrades, computer/site moves, natural disasters, and other IT related activities that can only be performed when end users are out. Provide technical support of agency computer hardware, software, and network technology to manager, peers, subordinates, and other agency staff. Troubleshoot, diagnose and resolve agency technology infrastructure problems involving hardware, software and network related issues. Perform hardware, software, and network equipment installations. Perform desktop and network performance monitoring to address latency issues, conflicts, or other performance issues. Provide project management oversight of IT related projects within area of support. Design, modify, and implement new or revised systems to automate processes or improve work flow. Develop, test, maintain and implement computer programs or scripts to automate processes. Conduct product research and analysis of workstations, hardware, software, and other business solutions to identify issues and make recommendations based on this research. Develop, prepare and submit reports, statistics and other correspondence to manager, peers, and customers as requested. Complete, submit and respond to all IT assignments on a timely basis that meet management expectations. Provide first-level staff supervision and oversee the work of others. Must have reliable transportation with the appropriate insurance coverage and a valid Texas Driver's License and capable of transporting computer/network equipment to complete work requests. This work includes new installations and computer moves (Change Requests) to complete short term projects and for direct involvement with the planning and successful completion of long term projects. The Agency reimburses for gas mileage at the current State of Texas rate schedule. The employee is expected to submit a travel voucher for reimbursement no later than every 30 days. Techs are expected to return to headquarters by 5pm each day unless pre-scheduled with Management. On occasion is expected to stay overnight for training and/or to complete pre-planned projects and in support of sister Region needs when requested.
