Summary:

Provides organizational leadership as subject matter expert for outpatient; manages daily operations and drives change to ensure accuracy and quality of outpatient coding assignment across the system, assuring accuracy and timeliness in coding of the medical record. Works with hospital leadership and medical staff to improve the overall quality and completeness of clinical documentation to accurately reflect patient acuity and severity of illness. The role serves as the translator from clinical to financial. Leads efforts to ensure accurate code is achieved and denials are reduced with improvements in data integrity.

Responsibilities:

  • Manages outpatient coding that includes ensuring accuracy and integrity of ICD-10-CM, CPT and other classification systems for the purpose of maintaining compliance with coding guidelines, rules and regulations.

  • Maintains the coding process within the approved bill hold days. Expedites charts held on the CFB, DNB or other reports. Ensures all outpatient accounts are coded in a timely manner and timely response to coding issues.

  • Responsible for Personnel issues, i.e. vacation, patient time off and general time and attendance issues. Participates in PEAC process for outpatient coding. Provides educational support to outpatient coding team. Implements corrective action plans based on trends identified by internal and external reviews and personnel issues.

  • Coordinate and prioritize outpatient coding workflow. Monitor accuracy, efficiency and productivity of outpatient coding personnel to ensure compliance with departmental performance standards.

  • Reviews and processes accounts in coding-related Epic Work queues, collaborates with clinical areas, Revenue Integrity, Patient Financial Services, and Patient Registration for issue resolution. Ensures accurate code and APR-DRG assignment.

  • Participates in troubleshooting, testing, upgrades of coding, and electronic medical record applications in area of responsibility. Participates in coding audits, quality review and reviews payer denials as it pertains to outpatient coding, abstracting to assure medical record documentation supports the coded claim.

  • Manages time/attendance, schedules and participates in PEAC process for area of responsibility.

How You'll Be Successful:

WORK EXPERIENCE

  • At least 3 years Outpatient Coding experience Req

  • At least 3 years Management experience Pref

EDUCATION

  • Two-year Associate's degree or equivalent experience Req

  • Four-year Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience Pref

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS

  • At least one of the following: Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), or Certified Outpatient Coder (COC) 1 Year Req
