Purpose of Job

This position is responsible for coding diagnostic and operative/procedure information from the medical record using various classification systems (including but not limited to: ICD-10/ICD-9-CM/CPT4/HCPCS, SnoMed) per various payer requirements; legitimately and ethically optimize hospital payment based on Official Coding Guidelines and NCCI guidelines with physician agreement and consultation when appropriate. Helps assure that claims are compliant.

Job Functions

  • Applies appropriate codes according to established coding guidelines to facilitate statistical reporting and billing processes.

  • Reviews documentation to ensure it is complete and appropriate. If clarification needed for purposes of coding, billing, or compliance, generates and follows up on deficiencies created or memos sent.

  • Reviews DRG and APC assignment to assess appropriateness, and take action when indicated.

  • Reviews and follows up on NCCI edits when relevant to coder functions.

  • Reviews and follows up on medical necessity billing concerns, and other issues in the realm of coding when referred by billing personnel.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education/Work Experience

  • Certified Medical Coder (CCS-P/CPC/RHIT)
  • New grads from an accredited Coding Certification Program will have one year to become certified.

Knowledge/Skills/ Abilities

  • Previous coding experience

  • Ability to work from home after meeting productivity/quality requirements

  • Knowledge of coding principals (ICD-10/ICD-9-CM/CPT4/HCPCS)

  • Knowledge of Anatomy/Pathophysiology/Pharmacology/Surgical procedures

  • Knowledge of hospital fee billing practices

  • Knowledge of basic computer functions and Microsoft Office applications

  • Ability to prioritize and organize responsibilities

  • Ability to communicate in the English language for effective written and verbal correspondence in order to complete job functions as mentioned above
