Performs difficult technical and administrative work overseeing and participating in the enforcement of North Carolina building codes for residential structures; does related work as required. Work is performed under general supervision of the Planning & Development Deputy Director. Supervision is exercised over personnel within the Residential
Planning, directing, and participating in building inspection activities related to residential structures; preparing and maintaining appropriate records and files; preparing reports.

Plans, coordinates, supervises, and participates in building, electrical, mechanical and plumbing inspection activities related to residential structures with responsibility for enforcing the laws, ordinances and codes relating to the construction and alteration of buildings.
Oversees and participates in the enforcement of building codes.
Coordinates plan review and inspection activities with architects, contractors, and citizens.
Directs, coordinates, and participates in inspection, office and field activities.
Reviews building plans and enforces regulations related to residential construction.
Issues stop work orders on unauthorized building activities.
Receives and pursues investigation of complaints and inspection activities; takes appropriate action.
Prepares a variety of reports and correspondence on inspection matters.
Performs assigned functions as a Disaster Ready Team (DRT) member, if appointed or volunteer.
Performs related tasks as required
Comprehensive knowledge of the principles and practices of building, electrical, plumbing and mechanical code enforcement; comprehensive knowledge of building, construction, engineering and structural engineering principles and practices; ability to plan and supervise the work of subordinates; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, state officials, contractors, builders and the general public; ability to present facts and recommendations effectively in oral and written form; firmness and tact in enforcing codes and ordinances.
Compensation will be determined based on qualifications, internal equity, budget, and market considerations.
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited community college with major course work in building and construction and six years or more experience in building code enforcement with two or more years' experience in a supervisory position.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina. Possession of North Carolina Level III Standard Certificates in all trades
