The purpose of this position is to assist with the design, development, implementation and maintenance of the City's coastal and sustainability initiatives and to maintain and update data sets.

This class works under close to general supervision according to set procedures but determines how or when to complete tasks.The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.

  • Provide support directly to the Coastal and Sustainability Coordinators.

  • Attend and provide event support as needed.

  • Assist with managing the Litter Free, Beach Cleanup and Adopt-A-Road programs, including boosting participation.

  • Produce / design outreach materials and content.

  • Assist with community engagement, community grants, and design of stewardship programs.

  • Research and make recommendations for climate and sustainability action planning including targets and measurable indicators.

  • Research and propose policies, protocols and programs and work with Sustainability staff to create, present and implement.

  • Attend sustainability workshops and meetings as needed.

  • Assist with data input, management, and processing.

  • Perform all work duties and activities in accordance with City policies and procedures.

  • Other duties, responsibilities, and activities may change or be assigned at any time with or without notice.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Recent Associate or Bachelor degree in Environmental Science or current enrollment Bachelor degree program majoring in or specializing in environmental studies, sustainability education, environmental sciences, communications or other related fields

  • Must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license with an acceptable driving history.

PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Academic background and/or experience in urban planning, environmental science, engineering, architecture, communications, or environmental studies.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Demonstrated proficiency in using MS Office Suite of computer programs, particularly Word & Excel, to capture, compile, track, monitor, analyze, interpret, and make recommendations regarding the Department's operations.

  • Background in sustainable programs, environmental management, conservation and related areas

  • Knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and Local laws, ordinances, and policies.

  • Skill in oral and written communication.

  • Skill in using software applications to incorporate data driven decision-making, data analysis.

  • Skill in collecting, analyzing and interpreting applicable research data.

  • Ability to work with frequent interruptions and changes in priorities.

  • Ability to complete numerous tasks simultaneously and in a timely manner.

  • Ability to deal effectively with the general public.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.

  • Performs sedentary work that involves walking or standing some of the time and involves exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or sustained keyboard operations.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken.

  • None.

HOURS

  • Must be able to work up to 20 hours per week (May be required to work nights, weekends and holidays to meet the business needs of the City.)
