ACTIVITY POSITION DESCRIPTION

POSITION TITLE:   Head Coach

FACILITY:                Hardin High School

REPORTS TO:        Activities Director

POSITION OVERVIEW:

The person in this position provides leadership, supervision, and organization of a specific activity and will carry out the objectives of that program.  They help each participating student achieve a high level of skill, and appreciation for the values of discipline, and an increased level of self-esteem.  The Head Coach will establish good relationships with parents and with other staff members.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:

Begin practice sessions on the opening date allowed by the MHSA

All teams will compete in the maximum number of contests allowed by the MHSA if it is reasonably possible to schedule this number

Maintain proper Montana certification

Hold a first aid card and run as safely as possible the program with proper training procedures.

Teach and display good sportsmanship

Any season that extends beyond the normal season/school year due to tournament participation shall be considered part of the coaching contract

Process end of year reports, and any other necessary reports, lists or forms and submits such reports to the Activity Director, school and MHSA

Develop a daily and weekly practice schedule which will be approved by the Activity Director prior to distribution to team members

YEAR-ROUND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Maintain competency in rules, rule interpretations, meet procedures, coaching techniques, and general information about all aspects of the sport.  Encourage assistant coaches to do the same

Attend clinics, workshops, and meetings to keep abreast of new ideas, techniques, and rule changes

Implement proper procedures for out of season practices according to MHSA guidelines

Active in professional organizations such as state coach’s association

Inventory, select, care for and maintain equipment

PRE-SEASON RESPONSIBILITIES:

Formulate objectives for the upcoming sports season

Assist Activity Director with proper registration of all athletes

Review District policy on accident reporting and insurance procedures

Assist Activity Director in compiling eligibility lists and other reports

Arrange for a systematic issuance of school equipment

Make sure all athletes have had physicals and signed waiver granting permission to transport to nearest hospital in the event of injury before they may practice

Explain all regulations of the district presented in the Activities Code

Clarify to athletes the letter award policy

Select and instruct team managers on proper care of equipment, facilities, and other assigned duties

Make arrangements for all bus trips with the Activity Director

Prepare a written document of the method of squad cuts and awards system

Establish performance criteria for eligibility in interscholastic competition

Maintain on file a game book specifying usual season work-outs, off-season work-out, weight training program, suggested diet, schedule, and plays/strategy

IN SEASON RESPONSIBILITIES:

Attend District, State, and National leadership and fall leadership conference

Assume responsibility for constant care and supervision of equipment and facilities being used

Supervise control over all phases of teams in the program

Organize and schedules practice sessions on a regular basis with the idea of developing the athlete’s greatest potential

Apply discipline in a firm, positive and consistent manner as outlined according to activities policy

Emphasize safety precautions and uses accepted training and injury procedures.  Adheres to a highly efficient and technically sound program of injury prevention and follow up

Conduct self and team in ethical manner during practice and contests

Report outcome of home contests to media

Instruct players on rules and rule changes, and new ideas and techniques

Provide Activities Director a file copy of all general correspondence and bulletins to student athletes and parents

Adhere to the rules and regulations of the School District regarding school bus regulations

File discipline reports with the Activities Director

Directly supervise or designate an adult supervisor of all dressing rooms and locks up equipment at the close of each practice or contest

Accompany and direct the varsity team and assistant coaches in all interscholastic activities at home and away

Supervise team and insure proper conduct and discipline enroute to and at away from home contests

Require that on all trips, team members dress in a manner becoming to themselves as individuals and as representatives of Hardin Schools

END OF SEASON RESPONSIBILITIES:

Arrange for cleaning, storing and conducting an inventory of all equipment

Evaluate past season

Arrange for the systematic return of all school equipment and holds the athlete responsible for all equipment not returned

Recommend student athletes who have fulfilled requirements for athletic letters, certificates or special awards

Recommend additions and/or improvements for the care and maintenance of facilities

Make written recommendations to the Activities Director, personnel for assistant coaching positions

Submit recommendations for schedule for next year

Select equipment and makes recommendations for purchase of same.

Maintain records of team and individual accomplishments.

DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION / CERTIFICATION:

Valid Montana Certification

Meet MHSA requirements and passed coaching certification coursework

SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES:

Exhibit qualities of leadership and organization ability and reflect a spirit of cooperation in working with staff and school administration

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals

Ability to follow both oral and written directions and instructions of the athletic director

Ability to effectively manage time and responsibilities

Ability to write routine reports and correspondence

Ability to handle stressful situations

Ability to maintain confidentiality of employee and student matters

Ability to perform duties with an awareness of all District requirements and Board policies

EQUIPMENT USED:

Stopwatch, calculator, computer, copier, fax, audio visual equipment, telephone/voice mail, score-keeping equipment or other equipment germane to the sport/activity
