JOB DESCRIPTION

BOYS HEAD BASKETBALL COACH (High School)

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Valid Montana Coaches Certificate required
  • CPR/First Aid Certificate required

REPORTS TO:

Athletic Director

SUPERVISES:

Assistant Coach(es)

JOB GOAL:

To conduct the sport in the best interest of the school system by adhering to policies of the school board and the regulations of the school and District administration. In addition, all head coaches must familiarize themselves with the Montana High School Association regulations and the philosophies of the American Coaching Effectiveness Program.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES: (may include but not limited to the following):

  • Instruct all participants in the rules of the activity with an emphasis on those rules which have safety and sportsmanship implications

  • Monitor all injuries to participants in the program

  • Use a variety of techniques and drills to condition the participants in ways which will be both effective and safe

  • Display professional and sportsmanlike behavior at all times

  • Determine the program philosophy and system to be used

  • Promote the sport by prompt and accurate reporting of results to the media

  • Make recommendations to the Athletic Director

  • Provide leadership for assistant coach(es) and define the roles of those coach(es)

  • Cooperate with the Athletic Director, Principal and/or LDPS Administration in the following matters:

a. Equipment concerns and purchases

b. Transportation

c. Credit authorizations

d. Trip itineraries

e. Trip forms

f. Arranging practice times

g. Play-off/tournament arrangements

h. Substitutes for activities trips

  • Secure and care for equipment, supplies, and physical properties used by the participants

  • Prepare, inspect, and maintain practice facilities and equipment

  • Exercise good judgment in projecting positive coaching behavior and taking responsibility for the team’s appearance and conduct during practice and games or events. Physical or emotional abuse of participants, officials, or other coaches will not be tolerated

  • Encourage good sportsmanship, fair play and ethical relationships

  • Make sure all participant pre-season responsibilities (physicals) are completed prior to a student practicing or competing

  • Make sure all participating students are academically eligible

  • Exercise good judgment and due process when dealing with student infractions and discipline, and make sure that participants are aware of all expectations prior to the start of the season

  • Make sure all facilities are secured after each use, and that participants respect those facilities

  • Adhere to the following procedure at the end of games:

a. Teams should be instructed to return to their dressing rooms. No members of the team should linger behind or take issue with comments from fans or opposing students.

b. It is important that a manager or assistant coach be sent ahead to ensure that the dressing room door will be open.

c. Coaches should remain with their teams at all times, particularly if the contest is close or heated. If overnight trips are involved, coaches/advisors are to supervise motel and hotel rooms at all times and conduct themselves as if in the classroom.

d. Dressing rooms should always be supervised and must be picked up and left in and orderly fashion. Coaches have the responsibility to check for damage and garbage before leaving.

KEY ELEMENTS:

1.Follow and uphold the policies and mission statement of Lame Deer Public Schools.

2.Plan, organize, and direct the LDPS Boys Basketball (High School) program.

3.Instruct and demonstrate skill sets and techniques necessary for individual and team development.

4.Ensure that team rules and regulations regarding conduct and eligibility of the athletes are clearly communicated and followed.

5.Consult with the Athletic Director regarding any off-season training programs including scheduling dates for summer camps/practices, uniform fitting, pre-post tryout informational parent meetings.

6.Attend informational parent meetings at the beginning of each season for all levels.

7.Create a safe environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.

8.Work directly with school Athletic Director in reporting injuries, teaching precautions and procedures to ensure staff/student safety and help students prevent injuries.

9.Model good sportsmanship behavior and maintain appropriate conduct towards opposing team, fans, parents, officials, spectators and community.

Applicants for this position must have previous high school coaching experience. The applicants must possess a positive coaching philosophy, and excellent communication and organizational skills.
