The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Denver (OLLI at DU) is an adult learning membership program designed for inquiring adults, age 50 and "better," who wish to pursue lifelong learning in a relaxed non-competitive atmosphere. OLLI members come from diverse backgrounds and professions and share the desire to stay intellectually active and engaged. No one is a stranger for long at OLLI because everyone who joins has the same desire to learn and share expertise in the company of peers. Thanks to the generosity of The Bernard Osher Foundation, OLLI at DU joins a network of more than 120 institutes across the U.S. that are helping older learners find personal fulfillment.

Position Summary

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at the University of Denver (DU) Co-Executive Director for Marketing & Communications reports directly to the Associate Dean of University College and works collaboratively with the OLLI at DU Co-Executive Director for Operations & Curriculum to provide leadership to the OLLI at DU program. The areas of responsibility for the Co-Executive Director include marketing & communications, member experience, and fundraising/development.

The Co-Executive Directors' primary responsibility is to lead this vibrant and rapidly growing membership-based program and provide direction and thought leadership to develop strategic goals and objectives. Working closely with University of Denver personnel, The Bernard Osher Foundation, OLLI site managers, and OLLI advisory council, the executive directors will be responsible for strengthening the existing program and broadening access to the program for the 50+ community within Colorado. The executive directors will adhere to the policies and procedures of the University of Denver and will follow the guidelines of OLLI at DU and represents OLLI, and the university, throughout the Denver Metro Community, as well as the national OLLI community.

Essential Functions

Strategy, Planning, and Leadership (with Co-Executive Director of Operations & Curriculum)

  • Develop and communicate an inclusive, creative, and sustainable vision for OLLI that cultivates partnership and enthusiasm among OLLI members and volunteers, executive committee, and staff.

  • Organizes annual strategic planning session to provide guidance for the future operation of this rapidly growing organization. Ensures implementation of strategic plan.

  • Seeks input from Executive Advisory Council, as needed, on strategic initiatives.

  • Collaborate with the Co-Executive Director to plan and conduct Executive Advisory Committee meetings, all-staff meetings, and manager-level meetings.

  • Actively obtain market intelligence and data by monitoring peer programs and competitors to help inform the creation of new programs and services to serve the OLLI community.

  • Participate in the development and review of a budget for the OLLI at DU program.

Marketing and Communications

  • Implement the communication and marketing strategies identified in the OLLI at DU strategic planning process while pursuing short- and long-term strategies to increase engagement, visibility, and membership.

  • Lead the ongoing work of the Marketing and Communications Committee.

  • Continue to form relationships with county-level councils on aging, public libraries, senior living communities, and other organizations serving active adults by making presentations and attending senior fairs and expos.

  • Conduct research activities to test marketing strategies and messaging effectiveness. Evaluate successes and make iterative improvements to the communications plan and action planning based on agreed upon Key Performance Indicators.

  • Develop a Key Communicator Network that will create engagement and expectations for participants (primarily staff, volunteers, and facilitators) to support OLLI at DU with a promise for timely and relevant information to reach each person involved in this effort.

  • Prepare OLLI at DU print and digital marketing materials.

  • Produce a weekly newsletter for members, Everything OLLI, which demonstrates the value proposition of OLLI and the many benefits available to members.

  • Seek free PR in community newsletters, newspapers and other electronic and print media.

  • Continuously improve the messaging on the OLLI at DU website

  • Develop a crisis communications checklist that will anticipate possible disruptions to our work and define actions needed.

  • Develop and manage OLLI's community outreach efforts and strategies, specifically as it relates to building partnerships with the surrounding local community.

  • Promote OLLI membership to diverse and under-served populations.

  • Develop marketing and communication strategies to lead and execute local and regional publicity, advertising, and promotion.

Member Experience

  • Oversee the OLLI on the Move program to bring awareness and programming to the community. Assemble a master schedule of OLLI at DU On the Move courses and provide reports at monthly Manager and Executive Advisory Committee meetings.

  • Collaborate with the OLLI at DU Membership Experience Manager and the Membership Committee to provide ongoing social events and travel experiences for our members.

  • Provide opportunities for OLLI at DU members to attend and participate in DU events and receive benefits (speakers, Newman Center, Library access, food court, bookstore).

  • Collaborate with the OLLI at DU Volunteer Manager to develop and communicate volunteer opportunities within OLLI at DU.

  • Pursues opportunities for joint programs with other University of Denver departments, while fostering a sense of connectedness for OLLI members to the University community.

Fundraising and Development

  • Develop and provide leadership to a Fundraising and Development Committee.

  • Develop consistent sponsorship guidelines and create a plan for outreach to prospective sponsors. This program will constitute a new revenue stream for OLLI with the goal of making our marketing materials and catalog cost neutral.

  • Works closely with the University College Dean, Associate Dean, and University Advancement liaisons to continue the positive and collaborative relationship with The Bernard Osher foundation and satisfy fundraising and development needs of OLLI at DU.

  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills, including verbal and written.

  • Demonstrated ability to foster and maintain effective relationships with diverse constituent groups

  • Proven ability as an action- and results-oriented leader

  • Personable; ability to interact well with variety of people; able to anticipate needs.

  • Visionary - able to see both the big picture and the details needed to attain a goal.

  • Organized - able to juggle multiple priorities at once.

  • Experience with managing and presenting to large groups of people.

  • Excellent time management and prioritization skills.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365, including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, Teams, Adobe, and Zoom.

  • Excellent team builder with quality staff and volunteers.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.

  • Experience in executive leadership and management of large team organization.

  • Experience building community partnerships.

  • Marketing experience or familiarity.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Adult learning program development and implementation.

  • 8-10 years of leadership experience in a volunteer organization, such as OLLI.

  • Demonstrated experience with learning technologies, including distance learning platforms, and Zoom/videoconferencing.

Working Environment

  • Standard office environment.

  • Unexpected interruptions occur often, and stress level is moderate to high.

  • Noise level is quiet to moderate.

Physical Activities

  • Ability to sit in front of a computer for an extended period.

  • Occasionally required to move about the office/campus with the capability of transporting objects up to 20 lbs.

Work Schedule

The University's administrative offices are open Monday

  • Friday, 8:00 a.m.

  • 4:30 p.m. Work schedule may vary.

This position is .75 FTE and will work 28.125 hours per week.

In accordance with the University's flexible work policy, this position is eligible to be considered for partial remote work. Further details regarding this plan will be determined with the hiring manager and are dependent on the division and team specific needs.

Salary Grade Number:

The salary grade for the position is 12.

Salary Range:

The salary range for this position is $58,125 - $60,000.

The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidate's sex or any other protected status.
