Job Description:

CO-COORDINATOR OF PEER TUTORING (ACADEMIC COORDINATOR)

This is a full time, benefited, tenure-track, MCCC position.

BARGAINING UNIT/NON-UNIT: MCCC

ANTICIPATED START DATE: August 19, 2024, or as soon as possible

SALARY RANGE: Grade 6. Salary range is $70,120 - $100,531. Actual salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience in accordance with the MCCC collective bargaining agreement provisions and candidates are therefore advised that it is unlikely the offered salary will be at or near the top of the range.

OPTION TO TELEWORK: Potential for one day a week telework; most work is in-person.

THE PEER TUTORING PROGRAM:

The Greenfield Community College Peer Tutoring Program provides free tutorial assistance to GCC students for most courses offered at the college. Currently, the program employs twenty-five peer tutors to staff a weekly schedule of over 200 hours. This schedule includes both in-person and virtual hours on weekdays, virtual hours in the evening and on weekends, and in-class tutoring for specific courses. Peer Tutoring Program personnel collaborate with all departments of the college, particularly Math and English. Professional development opportunities for both staff and tutors are offered on campus and through the Learning Assistance Association of New England and the New England Peer Tutor Association. Since 2002, the program has been approved by the College Reading and Learning Association to award all levels of its internationally recognized tutor certification. The guiding principle of the Peer Tutoring Program is learners helping learners. In one-on-one sessions, tutors help their peers develop study skills and achieve academic success.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

This full-time professional staff member works with other Peer Tutoring Program staff to coordinate and provide general oversight of the program with primary responsibility for training and supervising all math peer tutors; they also support content tutoring in sciences, business, and information technology. Collaborates with the other PTP co-coordinator who oversees the peer writing tutors, who provide assistance for writing in all disciplines and for content tutoring in humanities and social sciences. Co-coordinators collaborate to cover all academic areas. Liaisons with all academic departments as well as the Advising Center, Library, Office of Veterans Services, Student Leadership and Engagement, and Wellness Center (Counseling and Disability Services). Provides instruction in classroom, training, and workshop settings.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Works in collaboration with Peer Tutoring staff to recruit, train, and provide ongoing supervision of tutors;

  • Informs students and faculty about face-to-face and online tutoring;

  • Facilitates math tutor meetings, including arranging for participation of faculty and staff as needed;

  • Participates in Peer Tutoring Program staff meetings and Math Department meetings;

  • Serves as an academic advisor;

  • Collaborates in oversight of tutor scheduling, payroll, and related issues;

  • Plans and facilitates tutor training;

  • Collaborates in production of reports, such as annual reports, as required by the college;

  • Helps maintain College Reading and Learning Association accreditation;

  • Collaborates with academic programs, as well as the Advising Center, Library, Office of Veterans Services, Student Leadership and Engagement, the Wellness Center (Counseling and Disability Services), and other initiatives designed to enhance student retention and academic progress

Requirements:

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE*:

  • Master's degree in Mathematics, or Bachelor's degree in mathematics and M.Ed., MAT, or master's in other related field;

  • Experience working as a peer tutor or with peer tutors;

  • Successful teaching experience at the college level in foundational or developmental mathematics;

  • Experience working in a collaborative environment;

  • Experience with program development or leadership;

  • Proficiency using technology in an education or work setting.

REQUIRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND APTITUDES:

  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, tutors, faculty, and staff on study strategies and student learning at the community college level;

  • Strong communication and coordination skills and the ability to work successfully with diverse faculty, staff, students and the community at large;

  • Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse abilities and academic, socioeconomic, ethnic, and cultural composition of community college students, faculty, and staff;

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience overseeing peer tutoring or similar programming;

  • Experience working with students with learning disabilities, neurodiverse students, and multilingual learners;

  • Experience with online instruction and student support services;

  • Experience as an academic advisor at the college level;

  • Involvement in efforts that promote diversity, equity, and inclusion;

  • Experience supervising college student employees;

  • Budgeting experience.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

All candidates selected for interviews will be asked to prepare a teaching demonstration and submit a portfolio that includes a statement of philosophy about program leadership and delivery of peer tutoring.
