Senior Pulmonary Function Technologist

Primary Function

Under general direction, follows established departmental procedure and policies in carrying out technical procedures for Pulmonary Function Testing (PFTs) of patients both in the laboratory and on the patient units. Explains testing procedure using caution to calm patients and/or family members. Conducts tests, coaching, evaluating and eliciting patient cooperation during complex maneuvers. Provides technical supervision for less senior technicians.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts short medical interviews regarding medications, possible infectivity and clinical background leading to the request for testing in order to select tests. Ensures patient safety during tests.

  • Explains procedure to the patient and/or family. Evaluates, coaches and elicits patient cooperation during complex maneuvers.

  • Protects equipment form contamination. Follows infection control and safety policies. Utilizes supplies and equipment correctly and efficiently.

  • Administers inhaled medications for testing purposes, Sets up special studies and assists during studies. Brings relevant information to the attention of the supervising physician. Obtains patient data to be used in conference presentations.

  • Conducts technical procedures including: spirometry, body plethysmography, helium and nitrogen dilution studies, steady state and single breath diffusing capacity, bronchial challenge studies, bronchodilator studies, arterial blood gas studies, at rest and exercise, impedance plethysmography and oxygen needs assessment studies.

  • Analyses tracings, reports results and reviews with Pulmonary Medicine staff for interpretation.

  • Maintains laboratory equipment, washes, sterilizes and calibrates instruments. Makes minor repairs, assesses need for outside repair service and ensure repairs are made correctly.

  • Makes recommendations for new equipment, may interview sales representatives. Maintains laboratory supplies at established levels and records as necessary, following departmental procedures.

  • Upon completions of tests, ensures appropriate forms are made out with the necessary patient information, tests given, etc. Carries out billing procedures and maintains all necessary laboratory records. Operates computer during pulmonary function testing.

  • Trains Pulmonary fellows, rotating residents, anesthesiologists and respiratory students at the appropriate level in the performance of pulmonary function tests.

  • Makes judgements and solves discrepancies. Alerts supervisor when appropriate. Follows policy and procedures for Code 1, Code 4, Code D and Code 99. Functions effectively and delegates appropriately in emergency situations.

  • Performs all other related duties as assigned.

Job Qualifications and Specifications

A BS Degree in Biological Science or two to three years related experience required. Current RI Respiratory Care Practitioners license and certification or Registry in Pulmonary Function Technology or Respiratory Therapy. Two to three years experience as a Respiratory Therapist or Pulmonary Function Technologist.

Physical Environment

The job is typically required to be exposed to a work environment which requires safety precautions to be taken.
