Job Summary OVERVIEW: The University of Michigan is looking for an experienced Boiler Maintenance and Repair Mechanic for its Outlying Boiler Enterprise (OBS). The OBS enterprise operates and maintains 212 steam and hot water commercial boilers in buildings around campus. The boiler fleet range from 299 MBTU high efficiency hot water boilers to large 30,000 MBTU fire tube steam boilers. This position is a member a seven (7) person maintenance crew who supports the boiler operations staff and water chemistry personnel. This is not an entry-level position. Responsibilities* BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY: To operate and maintain high and low pressure gas on oil fired boilers, supplying steam or hot water; and perform complex mechanical work on the installation, setup, dismantling, moving, testing, maintenance and repair of boilers and related machinery. CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: * Conduct complex preventative and corrective maintenance and inspections of boiler systems. * Perform brazing and soldering. * Install and replace stainless steel and copper tubing, valves and component parts in equipment and electronic boiler control systems. * Fabricate and install parts by machining or cutting metal and bending steel pipe and sheet metal for duct work and stacks. * Repair or replace electrical motors, pumps, air compressors, heat exchangers, valves, bearings and pulleys on boiler related systems. * Install furnaces. * Calibrate and adjust natural gas pressure regulators. * Trim boiler combustion using flue gas analyzers on non-parallel positioning combustion control boilers. * Utilize mechanical and electrical blueprints for trouble shooting. * Layout and build boiler small bore pipe and tubing systems. * Rebuild, setup and calculate capacity of water softeners. * Observe University fire and safety procedures such as burn permits, personal protective equipment use, lockout and confined space procedures. * May coordinate the work, and instruct Boiler Operator Trainees and Boiler Operators. RELATED DUTIES: * Start up and shut down boilers, monitor boiler operations and react to varying load requirements. * Inspect and adjust automatic and manual boiler control mechanisms. * Clean, inspect and perform routine maintenance on equipment and facilities including but not limited to, oiling, greasing, repair of furnace refractories and repacking of leaking packing glands, inspecting, adjusting and replacing belts and rebuilding bottom blow valves. * Maintain chemical balance in boiler water according to prescribed procedures. Required Qualifications* NECESSARY QUALIFICATIONS: * Graduation from high school or a trade school, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. * Reasonable progressively responsible experience in boiler maintenance. * Considerable maritime or boiler room experience with high pressure boiler operations. * Must demonstrate a detailed understanding and practical experience of the technologies associated with operating conventional and modern boiler controls. * Thorough knowledge of the equipment, methods and material used in boiler operations, water treatment, and combustion controls. * Considerable working knowledge and basic trouble shooting skills for all water treatment equipment such as reverse osmosis, water softeners, de-aerating feed tanks, etc. * Thorough knowledge of the operating and maintenance requirements of high and low pressure boilers and related equipment. * Advanced knowledge of boiler codes and their application. * Ability to tolerate high levels of heat and noise. * Considerable mechanical aptitude. * Considerable knowledge of the equipment, methods and materials used in boiler operations. * Considerable knowledge of the operation and maintenance requirements of high pressure boiler and related equipment. * Ability to regulate boiler operation. * Must be able to perform all duties within the job classification with or without a reasonable accomodation. There is a 6-month probationary training period to allow a candidate to gain the practical experience needed to augment their current practical experience to enable them to round-out the qualifications for this position.
