Watertown Regional Medical Center, Sr. Behavioral Health Unit, is seeking a Certified Nursing Assistant for the role of Mental Health Technician (MHT). Will be responsible to assist with nursing care of the patient, within the Sr. Behavioral Health unit. Working under the direction and supervision of the Registered Nurse and in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team, will performs basic nursing care, assists patients with activities of daily living, maintains a safe and therapeutic environment and assists in the admission, provision of care, discharge and transfer of patients. Will work collaboratively as a part of a patient focused team to provide excellent care and services in accordance with applicable scope and standards of practice. Care is provided based on individual treatment plan with specific attention to the age and developmental stage of the patient, cultural factors, level of functioning, mental status, medical issues and family/living environment affecting treatment.

The Mental Health Technician (MHT) is responsible to assist with nursing care of the patient, within the Senior Behavioral Health unit. Working under the direction and supervision of the Registered Nurse and in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team, the Behavioral Health Patient Care Partner performs basic nursing care, assists patients with activities of daily living, maintains a safe and therapeutic environment and assists in the admission, provision of care, discharge and transfer of patients. Will work collaboratively as a part of a patient focused team to provide excellent care and services in accordance with applicable scope and standards of practice. Care is provided based on individual treatment plan with specific attention to the age and developmental stage of the patient, cultural factors, level of functioning, mental status, medical issues and family/living environment affecting treatment.

Essential Functions

  • Under the direction of an RN, contributes to the assessment of patients by collecting data for analysis by an RN. Assist in the admission process, including obtaining vital signs, safety search of patients and personal belongings, obtaining urine specimens and orienting new patients to the service.

  • Performs plan of care interventions and documents direct care assignments such as assistance with personal care and other activities of daily living, vital signs, weights, heights, routine specimen collections. Escorts patients to diagnostic tests and radiology.

  • May administer medication.

  • Documents patient care given and interventions in accordance with hospital policy and departmental standards of care.

  • Assists RN with development of plan of care. Seeks consultation from physician, RN, and other coworkers as needed.

  • Develops and implements long and short-term goals in conjunction with performance evaluation and planning.

  • Completes timely levels of observation and patient rounds as assigned. Documents promptly on flow sheet. Guides and assists patients in adhering to service safety and community policies and procedures. Evaluates the environment to ensure patient safety and promptly communicates any safety risks to Registered Nurse.

  • Assists patients with performing activities of daily living, including personal hygiene, elimination, nutrition, and ambulation. Assists in patient care and attends to patient within guidelines as supervised by the physician or RN.

  • Monitors, documents, and communicates patient's status and reactions to interventions with RN, physician, patient, and families.

  • Works as an advocate for the physical and emotional well-being of the patient by demonstrating willingness to meet the needs of patients, patients' families, physicians and other hospital departments.

  • Stocks and replaces department supplies, equipment and other items needed to provide necessary stock for patient care.

  • Maintains a structured, safe and therapeutic environment. Conducts psycho-educational sessions or other activity groups per therapeutic group schedule. Monitors medical condition of patients and reports changes to appropriate personnel.

  • Demonstrates immediate intervention in critical situations.

  • Identifies malfunctioning equipment and implements corrective measures in a timely and appropriate manner.

  • Cooperates with other personnel to achieve department objectives and maintain good employee relations, interdepartmental objectives, and infection control standards.

  • Utilizes less restrictive interventions, supports a trauma sensitive culture, participates in de-escalation techniques in crisis situation or aggressive/destructive patient behavior and participates in physical interventions under the direction of RN.

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.

  • Associates degree preferred

  • Minimum requirement of current CNA, EMT or LPN certification/license issued by the State of Wisconsin, required.

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) required
