Schedule: 24 hour 3pm-11pm, 24hr 6:30am-2:30pm

Pay: Based on CNA Experience, starts at $20.50/hr

REPORTS TO: SALSA/RN Designee/Director of Resident Health Services

GENERAL SUMMARY:

The Certified Nursing Aide (CNA), in accordance with established policies and procedures, assists the nursing staff in providing care for the residents of the Health Center, independent living and/or Cottage when assigned to one of those areas. The CNA is responsible for feeding, bathing, dressing, grooming, exercising, positioning, turning, and assisting in all the activities of daily living with any special function or need of the resident.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:

  • Cares for the overall resident personal hygiene and ADL (activities of daily living) functioning.

  • Gives treatments, performs tests, carries out procedures and collects specimens as instructed.

  • Reports and records observations and results of treatments, tests, procedures and specimens when indicated.

  • Transfers, transports, and escorts residents as needed.

  • Answers signal lights promptly.

  • Changes bed linens, makes beds and keeps rooms clean and orderly.

  • Takes vital signs as indicated

  • Keeps RN Designee/SALSA/Supervisor informed of resident status

  • Assists the client with personal care activities including bathing, oral hygiene, feeding, dressing, toileting and grooming.

  • Assists the client with exercises, ambulation, transfer activities and supervision of self-administered medication including:

  • Reminding client to self-administer medication

  • Verifying that a client has self-administered his or her medication

  • Assist the client with the self-administration in the form of opening bottles, bubble packs, or other forms of packaging if the client is not capable of performing this function.

  • Performs routine household services essential to client care at home, including shopping, meal preparation, laundry and housecleaning.

  • Assists with escorts to the dining room, beauty shop, physical therapy, activities, etc.

  • Makes visits to assigned residents.

OTHER DUTIES:

  • Maintains a safe and sanitary workstation and equipment

  • Encourages independence, attendance at activities, restorative programs and rehabilitation

  • Attends in-service training and education sessions, as assigned.

  • Performs specific work duties and responsibilities as assigned by supervisor.

  • Assists the resident with tray service.

  • Assists the ongoing assessment of residents needs to promote independence.

  • Maintains accurate records of observations and services rendered to residents.

  • Provides transportation for residents as assigned.

  • Performs specific work duties and responsibilities as assigned by supervisors.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Successful completion of a State-approved nursing assistant training program. Prior geriatric nursing aide experience is preferred. Registration with State of Connecticut Registry is required.

  • Ability to understand and follow instructions in English, communicates effectively, and performs simple arithmetic.

  • Ability to document care given legibly.

  • Good observation and data collection skills.

  • Must be able to transfer residents weighing 50lbs or more using a transfer belt, or mechanical lift or with assistance from others.

  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized functions.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS:

Frequent standing, stooping, bending, stretching, squatting; may be exposed to blood and bodily fluids which may contain HIV and/or HPV; must be able to transport residents via wheelchair, Geri-chair or shower chair, pushing up to 200lbs unassisted. Must be able to transfer, lift, turn, and position a resident weighing up to 125lbs unassisted, or with the assistance of one other person for residents weighing over 125lbs. Must be able to stoop, bend, stretch, squat, stand, and walk for up to 95% of the workday. Must be able to walk long distances, at a rapid pace. Must be subjected to offensive odors, and combative behavior. May be exposed to cleaning chemical odors. Must be able to reach up to a level of six feet; must be able to push a dietary cart up to 40lbs unassisted. Must be able to lift and carry up to 20lbs frequently, and 50lbs occasionally.
