Position Overview:

Provides technical support, troubleshoots and resolves urgent technical issues, and responds to help requests for the Center for Research and Education and Interdisciplinary Computation (CREIC). Identifies and escalates complex issues and initiates solutions to these issues. Installs computer hardware, repairs software, and runs diagnostic programs.

Installs, maintains, and supports user connection to and use of CREIC resources. Configures and installs hardware or software that supports critical educational and research computational needs. Involved in the installation and rollout of new software packages, and upgrades.

Receives and addresses service requests from individual end users or the CREIC help desk related to the use of CREIC resources. Maintains the inventory of parts or components, tracks the progress of service requests and updates ticketing systems, and logs repairs and services performed. Tests software and hardware to evaluate the ease of use and whether the product will aid a user in performing educational and research computing needs.

Writes software and hardware evaluation and recommendation for management review. Oversees production of user-training manuals and procedures. Oversees development of training materials, such as exercises and visual displays.

Handles complex issues and problems. Possesses a high-level working knowledge of the subject matter. Reports to the Director of CREIC. The general schedule for this position is 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.

College/Department Overview:

The College of Mathematics and Science currently has 135 full-time and over 70 part-time faculty in 7 academic departments. The College serves more than 3,000 undergraduate students in 29 majors and provides graduate programs in Biology, Computer Science, Data Science, Cybersecurity, Applied Mathematics and Computer Science, Applied Mathematical Science, Engineering Physics, and Nursing.

Accreditation/Certification is held by ABET, the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), the American Board of Funeral Service Education, and the American Chemical Society. Department Specific Essential Job Functions:

Responsible for deployment and maintenance of CREIC computational resources and user-onboarding, installation of user software requests on CREIC resources. Supports system administration and security of CREIC resources.

Works as part of the CREIC team in fulfilling current needs and anticipating future needs of educators and researchers. Creates reports detailing the use of and issues with CREIC resources.

Scope & Impact: This position is an entry-level professional position, with actions that may have a measurable impact on operations within a work group.

Communication & Interaction: Routinely answers questions and provides information and data requested by individuals within or outside of the work area. Questions that require interpretation or are not easily resolved are referred to Supervisor.

Effective Knowledge: Demonstrates ability to execute tasks according to standard operating procedures and/or direction. Demonstrates ability to learn the new subject matter, coupled with attention to detail and responsiveness to feedback.

Problem Solving & Judgement: Performs a variety of duties following established policies and procedures.

Resolves problems by selecting from approved alternatives based on past practices, established procedures, or direction. Relies on direct supervision is available to set priorities and objectives, and to assist in problem resolution.

Budget Authority: May provide input into budget development by assisting with the identification of operational needs and requirements.

Policy & Procedure Authority: Primarily responsible for executing routine procedures with direction from senior staff.

Reporting Relationships: Generally reports to a manager or higher but may receive basic operational direction and guidance from senior level staff members.

Qualifications Required:

Requires a Bachelor's degree in a job-related field or 4+ years of equivalent work experience in a chosen field that provides knowledge of and exposure to fundamental theories, principles, and concepts related to this field and 3+ years of system administration experience. Requires the application of expertise in a chosen field to achieve results.

Qualifications Preferred:

Experience in Linux system administration

Experience in high-performance computing (HPC) clusters or other platforms

Experience in networking on HPC platforms

Experience in cluster management software

Experience in security on HPC platforms
