Examples of Work

Assist in the planning, development and implementation of leisure time program for inmates which includes, but is not limited to: athletics, music, television programming, cultural events and activities. Assist in policy development.

Supervise the daily use of equipment and materials to assure minimum breakage, loss, etc. Assist in the maintenance of records and keep written records on residents' participation in all leisure time programs. Develop and coordinate outside community contacts.

Encourage participation in events. Manipulate doors and locks. Assist in the maintenance of security and sanitation.

Perform searches. Move equipment weighing up to 50 lbs. Specifically, this employee will be part of a team that is responsible for:

  • Development and maintenance of new inmate clubs

  • Planning and coordinating special events such as banquets, symposiums, speaking engagements, etc.

  • Coordinate volunteer programs and provide supervision as needed

  • Compile and disseminate appropriate documentation for data collection

  • Work with internal and external persons and organizations to establish and maintain pro-social inmate activities

  • Facilitate process for recruiting and on-boarding of new facility volunteers as well as maintain current volunteer status to include addressing violations or issues as needed.

  • Provide volunteer orientation training for all volunteers, new and existing

  • Build and maintain positive working relationship with both internal and external stakeholders Supervise an inmate clerk

  • Serve as backup to the Religious Coordinator

Qualifications / Requirements

REQUIREMENTS: Experience in recreation management, recreation therapy, or a related field may be substituted for a degree on a year for year basis OR Bachelor's degree in recreation management, recreation therapy, or a related field.

PREFERRED: Bilingual skills in English and Spanish desired and assessed. Experience in relevant recreational activities in a custodial setting.

OTHER: Transcripts required prior to appointment.

Must be able to work evenings and weekends. Applicants accepting a job offer must pass the following pre-employment exams in this order: medical exam and, at a randomly announced time, pass a drug test. Once at the Staff Training Academy, must successfully complete the fully paid NE Corrections Training Program.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of: rules, regulations and strategies of sports and other recreational activities; institution rules and regulations; principles, techniques, and practices of recreational activity; CPR; self-defense; behavior modification treatment programs; first-aid.

Skill in: performing various sports, crafts, music, and other recreational activities; operating standard recreational equipment; leading recreational activities.

Ability to: successfully complete training courses in CPR, self-defense, behavior modification treatment programs and first-aid; learn to handle residents in all stages of development and rehabilitation; effectively terminate deviant behavior; explain rules and regulations of sports and recreational activities in a positive manner; communicate effectively by giving instructions and documenting resident participation; understand the behavior modification treatment programs; organize, direct, develop interest, and instruct residents in recreational activities; communicate effectively; coordinate activities with outside community and volunteer groups; handle residents in all stages of rehabilitation; organize activities; actively participate in activities such as sports, games, and music.

Hwy 50, Tecumseh, NE Examples of Work Observe, monitor, and coordinate inmate activities, including unit sanitation, clothing exchange, food service, medical distribution, mail distribution, and room and unit inspections. Must be alert to security, health and safety situations. Guides, observes, and documents inmate behavior for the purpose of establishing/following rehabilitation/treatment plans and discipline. Writes reports on inspections, inmate grievances, disciplinary actions, and inmate performance. Trains inmates in specific task and job practices of sanitation. Observes inmates in the housing unit area to detect abnormalities, problems, or unrest and to initiate corrective actions. Instructs inmates on the rules and regulations of the unit and expected behavior. Counsel inmates, including crisis intervention, to assist them in adapting to the prison environment; solving problems; filing grievances; and planning for treatment changes, furloughs, and parole.
