Tell me about the role:

The Clinical Laboratory Scientist I (CLS I) is an entry level position that functions under the direction of senior technical personnel. Responsibilities include performing routine laboratory tests and may include some technically complex assays. The CLS I's activities include operating and maintaining test equipment, performing and documenting QC, recognizing and responding to problems, and verifying and reporting test results. Additional duties include general support functions necessary for the routine operation of the laboratory. Performs all job duties with sensitivity and attention to the age and developmental issues of the patient population(s) being served.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Performs routine and technically complex laboratory tests.

  • Operates, calibrates, and maintains lab equipment and instrumentation used in routine and complex clinical testing.

  • Provides for the appropriate educational experience of clinical laboratory students assigned to the division.

  • Special projects or assignments.

  • Reviews and ensures reliability of results personally performed and checks other analysts' work based on quality control and assurance mechanisms, specimen integrity, known clinical history or delta checks, and takes corrective action as necessary.

  • Uses established quality assurance protocols to ensure proper functioning of instruments, reagents and analytical procedures including assaying appropriate standards and controls, performing instrument function verifications and recording control data.

  • Reviews new and existing policies and procedures according to established protocols.

  • Performs phlebotomy procedures including venipuncture and capillary puncture; uses proper technique in accordance with SOPs.

  • Follows Current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP).

Education Requirements:

Bachelor's Degree in a biological science, chemistry, medical technology, or related science.


License/Certification/Registration Requirements:

A valid California Clinical Laboratory Scientist license or limited license appropriate for the area of responsibility

USC's Dana and David Dornsife College of Letters, Arts & Sciences "Dornsife", and USC Viterbi School of Engineering "Viterbi" are seeking a Core Lab Financial Coordinator (Budget/Business Analyst) to join their teams. The Core Lab Financial Coordinator provides financial and budget support to a group of fee-for-service, core instrumentation labs/recharge service centers including, but not limited to, the Nanofabrication facilities, the Center for Nano Imaging and the Center for Peptide and Protein Engineering. The individual is primarily responsible for coordinating billing/collections and managing budgets and expenses with additional financial duties as described. This position works closely with the core lab faculty directors, core technical staff and Dornsife and Viterbi finance offices. As this is a joint position, and a position needs a primary department, the individual hired will be part of the Viterbi Business Affairs office, in the Finance team and report to the Assistant Director, Budget Management & Finance. The Assistant Director will work with the Core Directors and the Core Lab Financial Coordinator to determine relative workloads between the cores, adjust as needed regularly, resolve challenges and manage performance feedback. The ideal candidate will have experience with account reconciliation, budget preparation and forecasting, and preparing ad hoc reports. This position requires the demonstrated ability to pay close attention to detail, multi-task, and be able to present findings based on analysis to superiors. Job accountabilities include: * Administers the core lab budgets. Monitors actual income and expense and develops projections in order to authorize or extend financial commitments. Analyzes current performance to plan. Identifies and researches variances and trends and brings to the attention of the supervisor for discussion and resolution. Projects future budget performance based on knowledge of assigned operations. * Manages invoicing and collections to ensure timely delivery and receipt, using the university core lab billing system. Works with customers to ensure payment. * Sets up and maintains accounts. Reconciles account balances and activity to university financial records and initiates correcting entries. Prepares and submits financial reports as required and reviews for accuracy prior to distribution. Troubleshoots problems, including research of pertinent facts and interacts with appropriate university staff to achieve resolution. Coordinates year-end financial transfer and closing activity. * Determines when budget adjustments are required and prepares in accordance with university financial guidelines or agency requirements and restrictions. * Assists in local planning of short and long term budgets by compiling and organizing data for use in forecasts. * Provides information to faculty, staff and students regarding university financial policies and procedures. Assists faculty, staff and students in financial transactions such as purchasing equipment and supplies and accounting for travel expenditures and reimbursements. * Coordinates purchasing activities and interfaces with vendors as required, in collaboration with core lab faculty and technical staff. * Coordinates undergraduate and graduate student payroll instructions. * Prepares ad hoc financial reports as requested.
