Job Summary: Primary responsibilities include the efficient management of all Grocery departmental staff in all aspects of the product stocking process, including staging, stocking, merchandise rotation, date management, shelf blocking and product facing, and to do so in a manner that improves the store's appearance and enhances the customer experience; to efficiently manage all Housekeeping staff and verify their duties are being performed according to store policy; to manage and perform the responsibilities of closing the store when scheduled; to direct and monitor store operations in the absence of the Store Manager and Assistant Store Manager.

Duties and Responsibilities: The essential duties and responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

General

  • Observe and enforce all store rules and university policies;

  • Maintain a neat, well-groomed personal appearance at all times and enforce store dress code and grooming standards throughout the evening shift;

  • Observe shift operating hours at all times as scheduled or assigned by store manager and ensure that every department personnel do likewise;

  • Be able to multi-task well, especially in fast-paced environments/situations;

  • Adhere to all local, state, and federal health and civil code regulations throughout the store;

  • Supervise and work alongside Grocery and Housekeeping student employees to maintain store operations and keep students on task at all times

  • Work with the Opening Store Supervisor, or manage in the absence of the Opening Store Supervisor, the receiving and unloading of merchandise from any vendor:

  • Ensure that all items are accurately received and every respective invoice reflects all SKUs and quantities listed

  • Ensure accurate billing and pricing

  • Routinely check product to confirm quality, count and condition

  • Enforce receiving procedure according to company policy

  • Inform respective department heads of received inaccurate and/or damaged items

  • Handle damaged merchandise according to company policy;

  • Ensure that all evening employees comply with safety policies and procedures;

  • Professionally handle customer complaints and provide them with satisfaction when possible;

  • Ensure favorable store image to customers by maintaining a clean, attractive and friendly store;

  • Maintain good communications with superiors and subordinates throughout the store;

  • Greet all customers and provide them with prompt and courteous service;

  • Perform other duties and assignments as directed.

Bookkeeping

  • Maintain, safeguard and forward all department-related accounting reports and documents to each respective department head, as well as the store manager when needed, according to company policies and procedures;

  • Review and commit invoices, credit memos and inventory adjustment documents to confirm accuracy of item descriptions, sizes, quantities and margins.

Merchandising

  • Conduct a daily store walk through to determine needs, and to verify that items are in stock in sufficient quantity and displayed in such a way as to maximize sales;

  • Supervise and work alongside all Grocery department student workers in stocking, fronting and blocking to ensure refrigerated and frozen coolers, store shelves and other displays are fully stocked and faced at all times according to department standards;

  • Keep merchandise rotated in accordance with store policy and product code dates, and to pull all out-of-date merchandise, and to inform and/or assist the other department heads of any situations within their respective departments that need attention;

  • Block/front aisles in store to keep it attractive and professionally organized;

  • Ensure approved procedures are followed for receiving product, price marking and restocking to ensure quality protection and product rotation;

  • Ensure maximum efficiency by monitoring personnel to effectively use employee hours, cutting when necessary or using idle employees in other departments where needed to optimize evening operation.

Maintenance and Safety

  • Maintain and oversee housekeeping and sanitation program for store and sales floor;

  • Supervise and work alongside all Housekeeping personnel in the evening to maintain cleanliness in all areas (sales floor, backstock and receiving, front offices, restrooms, foyer, front of store);

  • Direct and supervise staff to keep all sales and storage areas clean, clear and in good order;

  • Make periodic inspections of the physical conditions of floor areas during business hours;

  • Ensure that all employees respond promptly to emergencies or potential safety hazards such as spills, broken glass or plastic containers that contain liquid products;

  • Correctly fill-out accident forms for staff, students and customers when needed;

  • Check refrigeration equipment for proper performance at regular intervals during business hours;

  • Ensure that all equipment used in the department is maintained in good working order.

Security

  • Ensure that receiving policies and procedures are complied with to protect store assets;

  • Perform routine closing procedures to keep staff and store assets safe and secure;

  • Observe security standards by staying alert and being aware of customer actions and behavior;

  • Notify management or security and call attention to any abnormal behavior noted;

  • Maintain effective security standards and procedures for all areas within the store.

Personnel

  • Supervise all student Grocery and Housekeeping department personnel to perform assignments according to job requirements while maintaining effective employee relations;

  • Create and post all Grocery and Housekeeping student schedules in a timely manner;

  • Maintain high standards of employee morale and promote an atmosphere of cooperation;

  • Lead student employees by setting the standard for completing department tasks and that they follow store and SAU policies.

  • Education and/or Experience:

  • Minimum educational requirement is a high school diploma or GED. A college background is preferred.

  • Minimum 1 year of retail experience is required, specifically with merchandising and/or inventory management.

  • Strong personnel supervisory skills is preferred. If no prior experience, there will be the expectation that it will be learned and used well in a timely manner.

  • Mathematical Skills:

  • Must possess the math skills necessary to verify vendor invoice charges and counts, calculate gross margins, percentages and losses, analyze inventory reports.

  • Language Skills:

  • Ability to hear, speak, and understand the spoken word in order to respond promptly to pages for assistance, to accommodate verbal requests from customers for information or assistance, to answer telephones and to be able to communicate effectively with customers, department employees, the store's co-workers, visitors and sales representatives;

  • Ability to read, write, analyze, interpret and understand the English language with sufficient proficiency in order to:

  • read and understand company handbooks, policies and procedures;

  • be able to compose and write information notices or bulletins to staff;

  • read and understand other written job-related documents including postings on company bulletin boards;

  • Ability to compose and write reports and business correspondence including effective departmental memos, employee corrective action notices and postings.

  • Reasoning Ability:

  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in circumstances where only limited standardization may exist;

  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in diagram, oral, schedule or written form.

  • Other Skills or Requirements:

  • Must be able to quickly learn and follow the operations and nature of all departmental duties;

  • Be able to perform, as well as, supervise all duties and responsibilities in an efficient and satisfactory manner that meets the minimum standards for productivity, accuracy, cleanliness, harmony and safety established in the store;

  • Proficient computer skills are desired including, but not limited to; Microsoft Windows operating systems, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook etc.), internet browsers (Chrome, Firefox etc.);

  • Must have the confidence to be able to quickly and effectively learn the in-house point-of-sale system (both back-end and cashier terminals).

Physical Requirements: The physical demands described below are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Some requirements may be modified to accommodate individuals with disabilities:

  • Must be able to lift and carry at least 50lbs or more with relative ease;

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, and use the hands to handle, finger or feel objects, tools or controls;

  • The employee must frequently walk, talk or hear, and reach with the hands and arms and occasionally, the employee must crouch or kneel;

  • Successful performance requires specific vision abilities that include close vision and the ability to adjust focus including sufficient visual acuity to check accounting reports, invoices, contracts and other written documents;

  • Be able to climb a ladder to retrieve inaccessible items for customers located above freezer cases or from stockrooms and other storage areas;

  • Have sufficient physical mobility or agility to be able to respond to fire or other emergencies such as cleanup requests (due to accidental spills or breakage of containers having liquid contents), shoplifting and other security assistance requests, customer accidents, etc;

  • Be able to perform all duties and responsibilities in an efficient and satisfactory manner that meets the minimum standards for volume, productivity, accuracy, cleanliness, harmony, safety and profitability established by the employer;

Work Environment: The work environment conditions described below are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. It may possible to modify some circumstances to accommodate individuals with disabilities;

  • The work environment includes occasional exposure to, in or around refrigerated storage areas and relatively damp and humid conditions;

  • Typically, the noise level in the work environment is moderate, however, on occasion, it can be somewhat noisy when power tools and equipment are in use or when duties require a temporary presence in the compressor area;

  • Access to break areas, storage areas, offices and employee restrooms requires ascending and descending a flight of stairs.
