Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):

DVM (Doctor of Veterinary Medicine) or equivalent degree from an AVMA (American Veterinary Medical Association)-accredited institution and licensed to practice veterinary medicine in the U.S.

Preferred Qualifications:

One (1) year of experience in a laboratory animal facility and/or clinical practice. American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) board certification or eligibility. Experience serving on animal facility regulatory committees (IACUC, IBC). Supervisory experience.

Brief Description of Duties:

A Clinical Veterinarian is responsible for providing veterinary care for a wide variety of species of animals used in biomedical research programs.

Clinical Responsibilities

Clinical responsibility for a wide variety of species of animals used in a biomedical research program. General duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Diagnosis and treatment of naturally occurring and experimental induced diseases of laboratory animal diseases.

  • Participation in health surveillance, environmental enrichment and preventative medicine programs.

  • Consultation with investigators regarding appropriate animal models, anesthesia, analgesia and euthanasia.

  • Routine veterinary rounds with an emphasis on monitoring transgenic, SCID, knockout and athymic mouse colonies.

  • Perform euthanasia, routine gross necropsy, sample collections and microscopic evaluations.

  • Clinical duty including the provision of holiday, weekend and night emergency on-call duty.

Anesthesia/Surgery:

  • Perform and oversee pre-anesthesia, anesthesia and anesthesia monitoring of large and small animal species.

  • Develop surgical animal models.

  • Perform experimental surgery, on request, and emergency surgery, as needed.

  • Perform and/or monitor post procedural care of large and small animal species.

Under the guidance of the Director, Management of Veterinary Core Facilities/Services:

  • Special Veterinary Technical Services.

  • Consult with investigators regarding scope of services needed.

  • Coordinate provision of all existing services (including: blood collection, antibody production and animal identification) and institute new services as needed.

  • Oversee recharge mechanism for services.

Teaching/Training:

  • Assist with overseeing a web-based training program for research investigators.

  • Provide monthly orientation session for new animal users.

  • Provide didactic and hands-on instruction for DLAR technical staff, Veterinary Technicians and research staff members.

IACUC:

  • Pre-review animal care and use protocols prior to submission to the IACUC.

  • Consult with investigators regarding animal models, anesthetics, analgesics, procedures, and euthanasia techniques.

  • Serve as a voting member of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee including protocol review, biannual facility site inspections, site inspections of laboratories, program review and assessment of IACUC protocol compliance.

Contract Projects:

  • Coordinate all veterinary and regulatory aspects of contract projects, in conjunction with the Director.

  • Assure conformance to GLP standards if applicable.

Research:

  • Collaborative research in the field of laboratory animal medicine or other health science related fields is available and encouraged.

  • Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.

Special notes:

This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.

In addition to the employee's base salary, this position is eligible for $3,087 UUP annual location pay, paid biweekly.

Evening and weekend work will be required at times.

Essential Position: This has been designated as an essential position based on the duties of the job and the functions performed. Positions that are designated as such may be required to report to work/remain at work even if classes are canceled, and the campus is working on limited operations in an emergency.
