Clinical Trials Manager (FD19-193)

Catalyst Biosciences is seeking a Clinical Trials Manager in our South San Francisco office, reporting to the Senior Director, Clinical Operations. The incumbent will manage the overall operation of our clinical studies including project planning, budget, resource management and CRO management.


  • Manage daily operations of studies to ensure compliance with applicable GCP/ICH guidelines and other regulatory requirements

  • Manage and lead cross-functional study teams, including vendors; liaise with other functional areas (preclinical, manufacturing, regulatory affairs) in order to accurately coordinate clinical study activities

  • Coordinate clinical study timelines with project leaders to meet critical milestones; escalate issues that may jeopardize timelines and deliverables

  • Conduct study monitoring visits and co-monitoring visits as needed

  • Provide regular updates of study progression to stakeholders

  • Lead development of study plans and system set-up; participate in preparation and ensure operational excellence of protocol, CRF, CSR and other key study team deliverables

  • Management of quality at the investigative sites, vendors and data; maintain clinical study files per ICH guidance

  • Oversee the clinical aspects of timely data cleaning, data analysis and the availability of top line results; participate in data reviews and review of statistical analysis plans

  • Assist with data reports, presentations and study documents

  • Training for investigators and sites

  • Recommends and implements innovative process ideas to impact clinical trials management


  • BA/BS degree with 4 - 5 years clinical trial management experience or advanced degree (MS/PhD/PharmD) with at least 3 years clinical trial management experience

  • Understanding of ICH/GCP guidelines and protocol and clinical drug development processes, clinical study design, study planning and management and monitoring

  • Experience managing CROs and other vendors

  • Demonstrated project management skills and study leadership ability

  • Proven leadership skills, executive presence, maturity, emotional intelligence, attention to detail, excellent written and verbal communication, problem solving with various working assumptions, intangible variables and incomplete information

VIEW JOBS 3/21/2019 12:00:00 AM 2019-06-19T00:00 Position Summary: The Temporary Senior Clinical Data Manager will support the Data Management group from study start-up through database lock and clinical study report. The successful candidate will deliver high quality data, on time and on budget. In this role, the candidate will be expected to lead and provide oversight for the execution of data management activities for more than one compound in a therapeutic area. This role will report to the Associate Director, Clinical Data Management. Responsibilities: * Works collaboratively with Clinical Programmers, Statistical Programmers, Biostatisticians, Clinical Research, DSPH, Regulatory and Project Management staff to meet project deliverables and timelines for moderately complex clinical data acquisition, quality checking and reporting * Ensures completeness, correctness and consistency of clinical data and data structure across all projects * Communicates with all departments regarding project statuses/issues; provides ongoing feedback on data management workflows to increase efficiency and provide feedback to CRAs * Partners with clinical study team to create the clinical data management plan (CDMP), including CRF development, data validation specifications, data transfer specifications, and clinical listings and reports * Oversees interactions with outside vendors (e.g. clinical laboratories) on collection, transmittal, reconciliation and transfer of study specific data * Performs CDM Systems activities and provides ongoing oversight (EDC Study Build, UAT/study database validation, edit check specification) * Vendor management and oversight of all CRO data management activities to ensure proper execution of data management plans, including communicating data trends/observations and relevant metrics with study team members, participating in regular team meetings and assisting in the creation of study timelines * Ensures guidelines and specifications on validation procedures and data transfer procedures are followed * Maintains appropriate documentation surrounding maintenance and archival of clinical data * Manages multiple and varied tasks; prioritizes workload with attention to detail * Participates in the development, review and implementation of processes, policies, SOPs and associated documents affecting CDM Qualifications: * BS/MS degree in relevant field (or equivalent experience) with 8- 10 years' experience in a clinical research data handling environment with relevant practical experience in protocol review/CRF design, clinical study databases and data management, preferably in the biotech and/or pharmaceutical industry * Strong well-rounded technical skills: EDC, SAS, and CDISC * Knowledge of lab/image data and other external data sources * Strong scientific background and understanding of clinical trials, pharmaceutical operations, and regulatory compliance * Practical knowledge of ICH, FDA, and GCP regulations and guidelines * Strong scientific background and understanding of clinical trials, pharmaceutical operations, and regulatory compliance * Proven ability to take independent action to initiate process improvements when needed * Proven ability to work in a matrix-like manner where cross-functional interaction is an implicit way of working * Solid time-management skills to meet deliverables commensurate with a fast-paced environment * Well organized, able to multitask and prioritize competing tasks * Proficient in the use of SAS * Experience with small biotech companies and high paced work environment is a plus * A strong understanding of clinical trial data including ability to prepare simple listings, pivot tables and reports using SAS to assist in data review * Excellent organizational skills with ability to manage projects and resources to meet timelines and budgets * Effective problem solving, collaboration and strong teamwork skills * Excellent verbal/written and interpersonal skills required for working successfully in a cross-functional team environment * Able to manage expectations with supervisors, peers and customers Portola Pharmaceuticals South San Francisco CA
