Job Summary/Objective:
Supervises and coordinates the nursing staff of a specific office site by performing the following duties. Assists in examination and treatment of patients under the direction of a physician, facilitates lab tests and paperwork as needed, and assists the center's nurse with clinical duties as directed.
Essential Job Functions
Greets patient and escorts them from the waiting room to exam rooms; prepares patients for exam or treatment.
Verifies patient information by interviewing patient, recording medical history, confirming purpose of visit.
Performs preliminary physical tests; take blood pressure, weight, and temperature; report patient history summary.
Secures patient information and maintain patient confidence by completing and safeguarding medical records; completing diagnostic coding and procedure coding; keeping patient information confidential.
Puts charts up for physicians when patient is ready in exam room.
Prepares exam and treatment rooms with necessary instruments.
Assists physicians in preparing for examinations and minor procedures.
Pre-certifies surgical and other procedures, if appropriate.
Schedules tests and off-site procedures when necessary.
Communicates physician referral requests to referral staff for processing.
Educates patients by providing medication and diet information and instructions; answering questions.
Counsel patients by transmitting physician's orders and questions about surgery.
Prepares and maintains supplies and equipment for treatments, including sterilization.
Disposes of contaminated items according to OSHA guidelines.
Maintains safe, secure and healthy work environment by establishing and following standards and procedures and complying with legal regulations.
Takes medical stock inventory and communicates supply shortages to Office Manager or Practice Manager.
Performs blood drawing (phlebotomy) as required for various laboratory tests ordered by the physician.
Enters patient demographic information into the computerized lab ordering system.
Obtains and handles laboratory specimens according to CLIA (Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments) guidelines.
Prepares blood samples for transport to reference lab using centrifuge-completes appropriate requisition paperwork for processing and billing of blood specimens.
Instructs patients in how to provide a clean-catch urine specimen whenever indicated.
Escorts patient back to exam room following blood drawing.
Ensures that laboratory samples are picked up by the reference laboratory daily.
Responsible for cleaning and closing down laboratory equipment at the end of the day.
Monitors logs of specimens collected and sent to reference lab-ensures reports are returned from the reference lab in a timely manner.
Directs lab results to physician for review and treatment plan.
Attends annual CPR, OSHA and CLIA training programs.
Attends all regular meetings.
Performs all other tasks and projects assigned by the Office Manager, Practice Manager, or the physicians.
