Job Summary

The Division of Pediatric Pulmonology in the Department of Pediatrics is seeking a Clinical Subjects Associate. The selected individual will work in partnership with Division clinical faculty and research staff. This position supports translational research in asthma, cystic fibrosis and other diseases.

Responsibilities*

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Screen patients for enrollment

  • Obtain informed consent

  • Coordinate patient scheduling

  • Administer patient surveys, case report forms

  • Enter, verify, and correct data collected on or from clinical subjects into various clinical trial databases.

  • Perform spirometry, collect nasal mucus or sputum for analysis. This may require travel to subjects' homes.

  • Process biospecimens

  • Submit protocols to the Institutional Review Board for approval or revision

  • Other duties as needed

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelors Degree in a health science discipline or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Clinical research experience.

  • Demonstrated ability to work autonomously in study management of clinical subjects.

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with other disciplines in the management of clinical subjects.

  • Good working knowledge and previous experience with standard computer programs, such as: Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft Access.

Desired Qualifications*

  • One or more years research experience

  • Functioning automobile with insurance for home visits

Work Schedule

40 hours, full-time. Usually Monday - Friday. 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, but may require after hours travel.

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings. Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.

Job Summary Note: Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this project will start with virtual recruitment and will transition to in-person recruitment when it's safe to do so. At this time, work will take place remotely. The University of Michigan Injury Center is currently seeking a Research Assistant to work on a nationally funded research study related to youth firearm carriage and violence. Responsibilities* The Research Assistant will be primarily responsible for recruiting potential participants aged 16-24 years of age seeking care at or who have sought care the Emergency Department (ED) at Hurley Medical Center in Flint, MI for this study. Also, duties include collecting data on study subjects excluded, eligible, missed, approached, and refused survey, learning the proper research protocol in an ED setting, becoming HIPAA and PEERRS certified, communicating with study subjects on how to enroll in a subsequent follow-up portion of the study, communicating with study subjects via text or social media to complete follow-up interviews, and conducting follow-up interviews in-person in the ED or within the Flint community. In addition, the Research Assistant will interact with hospital personnel and handle problems that may arise in the as part of the research study, and assist with data entry, data organizing, office tasks using Microsoft Word and Excel, and performing other routine project tasks. Organizing and maintaining collected participant research data. Performing medical record abstraction when needed. Conducting community environment assessments in Flint, MI. Participating in research meetings and carrying out routine correspondence in regards to project activities. Virtual recruitment requires accessing patient information from a University of Michigan secured device and adhering to confidentiality requirements. The research assistant will attend daily staff meetings and be expected to touch base with the project manager and other colleagues throughout the work day. Required Qualifications* Bachelor's degree in Psychology, Public Health, Social Work, or related health field. Previous research experience, clinic/hospital work or volunteer experience, and knowledge of the research process is. 0-1+ year experience in research and experience recruiting and consenting participants for studies. The candidate must be very detail-oriented with excellent interpersonal skills, ability to work well with others as well as approach strangers, and have strong oral and written communication skills. Reliable transportation is necessary and candidates will be asked to cross train in other job duties (i.e., recruit as well as conduct follow-up interviews). Weekend and evening availability is required along with the ability to commute to Hurley Medical Center in Flint, MI as the primary work location. Additionally, the ability to work independently, pay close attention to detail, follow through with tasks, work as part of a team, observe and maintain data confidentiality, and feel comfortable approaching strangers and comfortable in an ED setting is required.
