The Minneapolis Heart Institute Foundation (MHIF) is seeking a Clinical Research Manager to join its outstanding research team and lead interesting and complex cardiovascular clinical research with a current focus on Electrophysiology and Heart Failure. Job Summary

In support of MHIF's mission, the Clinical Research Manager provides managerial and leadership oversight for day-to-day clinical research operations for a small clinical team within MHIF Clinical Research Operations. The Manager supervises, optimizes and engages the talent of the Research Associates, Associate Research Coordinators and Clinical Research Coordinators (CRC's) on the team. The Manager is part of a research leadership dyad, partnering with a program director in the same specialty area. This dyad partners to drive the overall research portfolio strategy forward while collaborating on overall portfolio management and ensuring physician alignment. Additionally, the Manager works closely with the other clinical research managers, program directors and providers at the Minneapolis Heart Institute. It is expected that this position will also contribute toward enterprise-wide initiatives, such as process improvement and system optimization projects. This role is a player coach position. The Manager is close to and is conversant about the team's studies, overall portfolio and maintains integral relationships with the principal investigators of the team's studies to help further success.

1.Strategy and Goals/Clear Direction

  • In line with the overall strategy and goals of MHIF, the Manager develops goals and objectives for the portfolio and translates those goals for team members, enabling alignment and commitment to the team's results.

  • Regularly communicates with staff and proactively communicates organizational and department information to key stakeholders, including physicians.

  • Proactively partners with specialty area program director

2.Operational Effectiveness and Execution

  • Allocates, delegates work, and matches skills to ensure that work is assigned at the right level, optimizing staff talents and effectiveness.

  • Plans, establishes metrics, oversees, and evaluates study execution, team productivity, and quality of the work.

  • Develops and oversees process and procedure improvement to enhance operational efficiency. Champions lean improvement in processes. Holds team accountable for meeting and/or exceeding policy and procedure requirements.

  • Actively contributes toward enterprise-wide continuous improvement and system optimization projects.

  • Builds a means for accountability and a culture of accountability and learning from success and opportunities for improvement or learnings.

  • Monitors team quality standards in alignment with MHIF quality programs, standards, and grant and/or contract parameters.

3.Collaboration, Change and Culture

  • Collaborates with fellow research managers, program directors and other leaders at MHIF. Proactively communicates to ensure alignment and synchrony.

  • Identifies problems, barriers, and successes; removes roadblocks and rewards success within the team.

  • Builds and maintains a supportive team environment and cross-functional team relationships.

  • Helps the team through change. Builds a positive team culture and role models and reinforces behaviors that support MHIF values and culture.

4.Portfolio Management

  • Reviews new potential studies and participates in the study start up process for new studies. When possible, makes recommendations regarding study selection.

  • Monitors team's performance to budget and provides context or analysis on portfolio financials.

  • Supports study budget/contracting and resource allocation.

  • Understands complexity and anticipates requirements for first-in-human or novel therapies.

  • Reports on project enrollments, staff time allocation and reconciling actual to plan.

  • Reviews revenue/expenses for responsible projects and implements strategies that improve the overall enrollment and profitability of the team.

  • In partnership with Program Directors, MHIF Research Leadership and section physician investigators, collaborates and provides key information that facilitates a robust portfolio review and strategic direction.

5.Staffing and Team Member Development

  • Evaluates resource needs for the portfolio and discusses with managers and MHIF Research Leadership to leverage talent across all MHIF Research.

  • Interviews candidates for key hires and leads selection of final hire.

  • Ensures appropriate and thorough on-boarding and training for employees

  • Effectively coaches and provides constructive performance feedback for direct reports.

  • Identifies staff member growth needs, creates development opportunities, and leads development conversations.

  • Cultivates a culture which reinforces MHIF's values.

  • Develops solutions that maintain and/or improve morale and overall staff engagement to ensure retention of key talent

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in biologic/medical sciences or equivalent experience.

  • A minimum of 3 years of experience leading clinical research projects including projects evaluating drugs or devices that are not FDA approved.

  • Must have a track record initiating, executing, and completing clinical research projects.

  • Minimum of two years of supervisory/manager experience which may include hiring, training, coaching, developing and managing performance of individuals or equivalent and proven experience in influencing, support, and coaching others.

  • Previous experience as a Clinical Research Coordinator.

  • Clinical Research Coordinator/Professional (CCRC or CCRP) certification.

  • Good command of clinical trial acumen and sound clinical judgement.

  • Experience leading teams with a track record of effectively coordinating work across team members.

  • Versatile and effective interpersonal skills with a wide range of employees and stakeholders.

  • History of exhibiting personal leadership - has worked well during periods of change, has contributed positively to communications, and collaborated effectively across the organization.

  • Evidence of being self-aware with emotional maturity, self-management, and poise under pressure.

  • Experience in managing and assessing workflow and assigning and evaluating resources.

Preferred:

  • Professional degree in medical sciences (RN, RD, MPH, PA etc.)

  • Minimum five years people management experience within a clinical/medical organization which includes responsibilities for budgets, goals, strategies, process improvement, etc.

  • Expertise and working knowledge of cardiovascular diseases and therapies

  • High learning agility, goal-oriented, self-directed in work and learning and development
