The Tobacco Research and Treatment Center in the Department of Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) seeks to hire a full-time Clinical Research Coordinator II to assist with two projects whose goal is to help tobacco users reduce their risk of serious disease and death. One research project will interview people in treatment for opioid use disorder about their use of tobacco cigarettes and electronic cigarettes. The second project is a clinical smoking cessation program, conducted by telephone, to help employees of Partners Health Care Inc. to stop smoking.
The Tobacco Research and Treatment Center is a multidisciplinary team of professionals (physicians, behavioral scientists, nurses, tobacco treatment counselors and research staff) whose goal is to reduce the health consequences of tobacco use, which is the leading preventable cause of death in the U.S. The Center offers state-of-the-art clinical treatment to smokers and conducts research to identify better ways to prevent and treat tobacco use in youth and adults. It conducts research to identify effective smoking cessation treatments for smokers who are seen in a variety of health care settings.
This position provides an excellent opportunity for those interested in gaining experience in behavioral counseling and in conducting clinical research in disease prevention and chronic disease management. It also offers an opportunity to learn about clinical treatment for tobacco smoking, the leading preventable cause of death in the U.S. and worldwide. The candidate will work under the supervision of the Project Manager (Jennifer Kulesa-Kelley) and the Center Director (Dr. Nancy Rigotti). Job responsibilities include the following tasks:
Primary Job Responsibilities:
Program Coordination and follow-up
Monitor electronic database for referrals; conduct call attempts, send emails/letters, and schedule subjects with a tobacco coach for behavioral counseling
Respond to program-related requests made by patients for coaching or medication refills
Conduct telephone surveys of program participants
Enter follow-up data in data management system
Monitor automated telephone and email survey responses in the data management system
Study Enrollment and Consent
Serve as a study coordinator for the Vaping in Buprenorphine-treated patients (VIBE) Study
Reach out to recruit potential subjects for the study via letter, telephone, and email.
Enroll patients, obtain verbal informed consent, and administer a survey by telephone or in person. Conduct an additional qualitative interview with a subset of patients who complete the initial survey.
Enter data into computer database and reimburse patients for participation.
Other Job Responsibilities:
Conduct relevant literature searches and reviews for publications and grant applications
Assist with other research projects as needed
Maintain an electronic research database of participant data/data entry
Assist with creating project presentations (slides, posters, papers)
Arrange meeting agendas and takes notes for study meetings
Assist with IRB (human subjects) submissions/reviews
EDUCATION:
EXPERIENCE:
Prior work experience (1-2 years) as a research assistant or coordinator in a clinical and/or academic environment is preferred, especially experience with public health or health behavioral interventions
Interest in medicine, health behavior, psychology, or public/community health
Excellent organizational, communication (oral and written), and problem-solving skills
Enjoyment and skill in quickly building rapport with a range of prospective participants
Strong computer skills, experience working with database, spreadsheet, and word processing programs, and ability to use Microsoft Office (Access, Excel, Word, Power Point)
Familiarity with data analysis programs a plus but not required (e.g., SPSS, SAS or STATA
Excellent English language skills (grammar and spelling) are a must. Good telephone and in-person communication skills are also required
The ideal candidate is a self-starter who works well as a member of a team yet has ambition and drive to take on tasks independently. He/she must be able to handle and prioritize multiple tasks, have strong organizational skills and pay close attention to detail
Willingness to make a 1-year commitment
