Job Summary: Responsible for screening research subjects for participation in clinical research projects, enrolling research subjects onto these studies, monitoring protocol implementation, completing required forms and reporting results. Works closely with other clinical research staff.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Independently or in conjunction with other clinical research staff and/or research nurse, recruits and enrolls research subjects onto clinical research projects according to study protocols. May assess research subjects' eligibility for inclusion in a particular protocol based on contracts with physicians and nurses and knowledge of the protocol.

  • Checks all eligibility and ineligibility criteria with the research subjects' medical record. Verifies information with clinical research nurse and/or principal investigator.

  • Discusses informed consent with research subjects. Interacts with research subjects prior to entering the study and throughout the entire treatment. Assists with scheduling appointments and follow up tests.

  • Learns protocol and monitors strict adherence to protocols by physicians, nurses and research subjects. Reviews protocol requirements with physicians, nurses and fellows. Identifies any problems with protocol compliance and notifies principal investigator and/or research nurse. Begins to learn how to independently resolve problems with protocol.

  • Extracts data on protocol subjects from hospital records, outpatient charts and private physician office records in order to complete case report forms required by specific protocols. Enters data into computerized system.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree required.

  • 0-1 years related work experience required.

  • Working knowledge of computerized data (word processing, spreadsheets, and database).

  • Medical terminology.

  • Experience with computer systems required, including web based applications and some Microsoft Office applications which may include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Access.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous clinical research project experience.

  • Team Work: Ability to work collaboratively in small teams to improve the operations of immediate work group by offering ideas, identifying issues, and respecting team members.

  • Customer Service: Ability to provide a high level of customer service to patients, visitors, staff and external customers in a professional, service-oriented, respectful manner using skills in active listening and problem solving. Ability to remain calm in stressful situations.

Physical Nature of the Job:

Light work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force frequently to move objects. Some elements of the job are sedentary, but the employee will be required to stand for periods of time or move through out the hospital campus

VIEW JOBS 9/13/2019 12:00:00 AM 2019-12-12T00:00 GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT: The Institute for Technology Assessment at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School seeks a research associate for developing an opioids systems model. This model aims to improve and inform the national-level decision and policy making necessary to address the opioid crisis. Working in an interdisciplinary research group, the candidate will help with data analysis and model quantification, verifying its ability to provide realistic outputs historically and into the future. The verified model will be used to answer key policy questions and identify the best combination of interventions to combat the opioid crisis. The model is developed using system dynamics with close collaboration with the FDA. Candidates are expected to have some data analytics background, exposure to opioid databases (NSDUH, TEDS, and CDC's WONDER, among others), and familiarity with the literature related to prescription opioids and heroin. This position is best for individuals interested in building their data analytics portfolio, especially those planning to apply for PhD/MD programs in the future. This is a one-year position, with the expectation of renewal for a second year upon mutual consent. The researcher will directly report to the Principal Investigator (Dr. Jalali). Selected candidates are expected to join the project as soon as possible. PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Please note, the functions below are representative of major duties that are typically associated with these positions. Specific responsibilities may vary based upon departmental needs. Similarly, not all duties that have been outlined will be assigned to each position. * Statistical analysis of various opioid datasets as well as data visualization * Review and assimilation of the opioid literature * Documenting the workflow and data analysis procedure * Commensurate with experience and motivation, opportunity exists to participate in scientific manuscript preparation and writing * Composition of presentations & presentation of the results * Providing support for developing and updating the project website and disseminating the results * Providing support in generating parameter inputs and running of the simulation model SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED: * A strong interest in public health and health policy aspects related to the opioid research * Experience with at least one statistical software (Stata or SAS preferred) * Exposure to programming * Excellent writing skills for contributing to article writing * Ability to perform literature searches and critically analyze the literature * Strong work ethic and excellent organization skills Creative thinking, ability to work independently, a willingness to learn new software and skills, and the ability to handle multiple tasks are expected. Priority goes to highly motivated and organized individuals, committed to doing impactful research, with great attention to details. EDUCATION: * Bachelor's degree required. * Master's degree preferred Bachelor or masters (preferred) in public health, epidemiology, biostatistics, psychology, social sciences, and other similar fields. Familiarity with opioid research (data analysis and population-based outcome research or policy analytics) is a requirement. Familiarity with simulation/mathematical/statistical modeling is a plus, but not a requirement.
