SCHEDULE: Full-Time, Monday-Friday


The First Assistant/Registered Nurse functions under the supervision of a physician and performs delegated functions such as planning, preparing and setting up for cases, and managing supplies and equipment. The work that is performed is done under the established policies and procedures of the institution and according to the experience and scope of educational requirements of the individual and applicable legal guidelines.

The RN will be expected to anticipate the needs of the patient and physician and make decisions within the scope of their practice. The Registered Nurse responsibilities pertain to the clinical responsibilities required for direct preoperative and postoperative patient care. Prepares for surgical procedures; anticipates procedure/patient needs; and assists in timely setup/turnover.

Scrubs on assigned procedures and consistently seeks opportunities to advance skills in all specialties and surgical practice. Performs timely case breakdown, appropriate instrument management and room/department cleanup. Reports patient data (example surgical counts) accurately and in a timely fashion according to nursing policy.

Adheres to and consistently supports professional standards and health care regulations that provide for and promote safety and high quality patient care in Perioperative Services. Demonstrates responsibility for maintaining knowledge base of current unit and hospital-based communication through a variety of modalities including but not limited to communication books, notices posted within the hospital and department, meeting minutes, Jackson Hospital intranet, and JH email system. Conducts all tasks deemed necessary by the physician for inpatient and outpatient care, including functions directly related to scheduling, billing, and patient communication.

Demonstrates responsibility for own competency/mandatory and annual performance evaluation by maintaining all personal data up to date relating to roles as medical assistant, OR Tech, and first assistant responsibilities. Reviews, updates, and maintains case cards. Travel to various OR sites with physician as schedule warrants.

Performs suturing of incisions on patients in OR. Takes call with physician and is available after hours and weekends. Assist the physician with office visits and hospital rounds before and after surgical procedures.

Schedules all OR cases and outpatient procedures. Follows up with patients as deemed necessary by the physician. Submits patient prescriptions to pharmacy via phone, fax, or e-prescribing.


Graduated with an associates or bachelors degree in nursing. Previous O.R. and RN experience preferred.

Current licensure in State of Alabama as a Registered Nurse. Good verbal and written communications and interpersonal skills, and time management skills. Knows sterile technique.

Ability to form effective working relationships with hospital staff, physicians and patients. Proficiency with clinical nursing tasks. Ability to read, write and follow verbal and written instructions.

Visual and hearing acuity. Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. Ability to assist in lifting, pushing and pulling patients/equipment involving a minimum of 50 pounds.

Manual dexterity necessary to manipulate small sutures/instruments and to manipulate patient care equipment. Ability to walk and stand for prolonged periods. Ability to meet the attendance requirements of the job.

Core tasks, including but not limited to, the following: * Acts as primary site contact and site manager throughout all phases of a clinical research study, taking overall responsibility of allocated sites. * Develops strong site relationships and ensures continuity of site relationships through all phases of the trial. * Performs clinical study site management/monitoring activities in compliance with International Conference on Harmonisation Good Clinical Practice, Sponsor Standard Operating Procedures, Local Laws & Regulations, Protocol, Site Monitoring Plan and associated documents. * Gains an in-depth understanding of the study protocol and related procedures. * Coordinates & manages various tasks in collaboration with other sponsor roles to achieve Site Ready. * Participates & provides inputs on site selection and validation activities. * Performs remote and on-site monitoring & oversight activities using various tools to ensure: * Data generated at site are complete, accurate and unbiased Subjects' right, safety and well-being are protected * Conducts site visits including but not limited to validation visits, initiation visits, monitoring visits, close-out visits and records clear, comprehensive and accurate visit & non-visit contact reports appropriately in a timely manner. * Collects, reviews, and monitors required regulatory documentation for study start-up, study maintenance and study close-out. * Communicates with Investigators and site staff on issues related to protocol conduct, recruitment, retention, protocol deviations, regulatory documentation, site audits/inspections and overall site performance. * Identifies, assesses and resolves site performance, quality or compliance problems and escalates per defined Clinical Research Associate Escalation Pathway as appropriate in collaboration with Clinical Research Manager, Partner Line Manager and Regional Clinical Project Manager. * Manages and maintains information and documentation in Clinical Trial Management System, electronic Trial Master File, and various other systems as appropriate and per timelines. * Contributes to Clinical Research Associate team knowledge by acting as process Subject Matter Expert, buddy/mentor and sharing best practices as appropriate/required. * Supports and/or leads audit/inspection activities as needed. * Mentor/train other Clinical Research Associate team members Education and Experience: * B.A./B.S. preferred with strong emphasis in science and/or biology * Minimum of 4 years of direct site monitoring experience in a bio/pharma/Clinical Research Organization(or as country specifically requires) Travel Expectations: * Ability to travel domestically and internationally approximately 65%-75% of working time. * Expected travelling 2-3 days/week. * Current driver's license preferred.
