The Clinical Practice Specialist is a professional licensed registered nurse with graduate preparation at the masters or doctorate level. The Clinical Practice Specialist provides leadership in clinical expertise, nursing practice, organization/systems innovation and is a role model and mentor for Asantes Mission, Vision, and Values.
The Clinical Practice Specialist is an expert in clinical practice with a specialty focus in the Behavioral Health Services Population. As a consultant and clinical resource to nursing staff, providers, and organizational leadership, the Clinical Practice Specialist advances the practice of nursing throughout the organization by using innovative evidenced based best practices that address complex system problems and/or patient care issues. The Clinical Practice Specialist has the skills to assess, design, implement, and evaluate health care interventions to improve the quality, safety, and cost effectiveness of health care delivery with the goal of optimizing patient outcomes and experience.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Collaborates with nursing staff, leadership, and/or multidisciplinary teams to identify patient care problems, to implement evidenced based interventions to these problems, and to evaluate effectiveness of interventions.
Performs evaluations of practice and makes clinical judgment based on the synthesis of concepts, theories, principles, and care delivery models to solve clinical problems.
Uses theory and evidence to develop and implement strategies to create and sustain change in the practice setting.
Serves as a consultant to nurses, leaders, and teams across the organization to improve the delivery of care and improve communication.
Develops, revises, supports, and interprets policies, protocols, procedures, and workflows using evidenced based resources and best practices.
Support or lead departmental or hospital committees and meetings to facilitate improvement of patient care and development of goals, philosophies, and objectives for specialized patient populations.
Supports the risk management and quality and safety departments in the identification, review, and follow up of harmful or near miss events.
Support processes and programs related to quality, safety, regulatory, and accreditation requirements.
Coordinates the development and implementation of educational programs designed to convey specialized knowledge and skill for patients, families, nurses, and other healthcare personnel.
Coordinates programs for the professional development of nursing and other multidisciplinary staff assigned to specialty unit or populations.
Demonstrate strong interpersonal communication skills with patients/families, nurses and nursing personnel, and representatives from other disciplines at all levels within the health system. Includes relationship-based communication, conflict management, crucial conversations, peer feedback, and shared decision making.
o Clinical Nurse Specialist is the preferred advanced practice degree for this position.
o ANPD specialty certification and/or national specialty certification from a professional organization in relevant field of clinical experience.
o Current Oregon RN licensure
o Masters degree in nursing (minimum), advanced practice or doctorate in nursing practice degree preferred.
o Three or more years of nursing experience in specialty population.
o Evidence of continuing education per Oregon State board of nursing standards, required
Demonstrated clinical expertise in a specialty area utilizing clinical inquiry/research to provide evidence-based practice, required
Demonstrates experience utilizing disciplined inquiry, critical thinking, clinical judgment and decision-making, required.
Demonstrates the ability to synthesize scientific knowledge and data, participate in research and perform cost/benefit analysis, required.
Experience in developing, teaching, guiding and implementing best practices, professional standards and organizational policies, required.
Demonstrates leadership skills by providing a dynamic, interpersonal process in which individuals make a commitment to each other to interact constructively to solve problems, accomplish identified goals, purposes or outcomes, required.
Demonstrates communication that encompasses interpersonal skills of listening, validating, reflecting and providing constructive feedback, required.
Demonstrates the traits of a collaborative systems thinker through a shared decision-making philosophy, required.
Experience in performing consultation as a two-way interaction that can assist in improving the quality and comprehensiveness of care provided to patients and families, required.
Experience in project management and/or knowledge translation to practice.

Registered Nurse (RN) licensed by Oregon State Board of Nursing
Masters Degree in Nursing
o Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) licensed by Oregon State Board of Nursing, preferred
