The Clinical Pharmacy Manager has responsibility for the Clinical Pharmacy Services for Hoag Hospital and all included entities under the Hoag license. The Clinical Pharmacy Manager has oversight over clinical pharmaceutical care services, including programs, clinical services, clinical personnel, and the formulary.

Essential Functions:

  • Has oversight over clinical pharmaceutical care services, programs, "per pharmacy" guidelines, policies and procedures, and personnel (including Clinical Pharmacists, Pharmacist Specialists, and others as assigned).

  • Coordinates CQI and MUEs for the pharmacy department.

  • Has oversight over investigational drugs, pharmacy research, and oncology pharmacy services.

  • Along with the Director of Pharmacy, Sr. Manager of Pharmacy Operations at Hoag Irvine, and Pharmacy Manager of Operations at Newport Beach, the Clinical Pharmacy Manager oversees formulary management and coordinates the Pharmacy & Therapeutics (P&T) Committee.

  • Acts as the Residency Program Director (RPD).

  • Participates in relevant clinical or formulary committees at the regional and system level.

  • Scheduled to be on the Pharmacy Administration on-call schedule.

  • Plans and develops new services, systems, and methods to gain efficiency.

  • Performance evaluations for assigned pharmacist and technician staff, and other staff as assigned

  • Composes and distributes any departmental, P&T, or other informational newsletters for pharmacy staff, nurses, physicians, or other staff as relevant.

  • Attends committee meetings when assigned.

  • Ensures regulatory standards regarding medication use are met.

  • Scheduled to be on the Pharmacy Administration on-call schedule.

  • Functions effectively as the department head in the absence of both the Director of Pharmacy Services and the Pharmacy Manager of Operations.

  • Clinical Care: Ensure that quality patient care is delivered to all patients on a 24-hour basis, and the unit is maintained in accordance with professional and regulatory standards and the philosophy and goals of Hoag.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Education, Training and Experience

Required: Graduation from an ACPE-accredited pharmacy program with at least a BS Degree. At least three years of hospital clinical pharmacy experience, and/or supervisory or administrative hospital pharmacy experience is required.

Preferred: Graduation from an ACPE-accredited pharmacy program with a Doctor of Pharmacy degree. Completion of a PGY1 pharmacy residency training program.

Skills or Other Qualifications

Required: Clinical pharmacy and management skills. Good communication verbally and in writing. Computer skills including the use of pharmacy information systems, and Microsoft Office.

Preferred: Analytic skills with statistic, charts and data analysis. Knowledge of CPOE and Clinical Decision Support, and knowledge of pharmacy automation (automated dispensing cabinets, robotics, and other technologies) preferred.

License and Certifications

Required: Valid license to practice pharmacy as a pharmacist in the state of California (RPH).

Preferred: Board of Pharmaceutical Specialty (BPS) certification.
