  • MaineHealth seeks a Clinical Pharmacist (Critical Care, Cardiology, Research, Operations) in Portland, ME to dispense drugs prescribed by physicians and other health practitioners and provide information to Maine Medical Center's Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit, Medical Intensive Care Service, Surgical Critical Care Service, and Neuro-critical Care patients about medications and their use; support enrollment, dosage and record keeping for drug trials; and provide operational leadership for MaineHealth pharmacy services. Core duties include reviewing drug therapies; formulating recommendations based on current literature and established standards of practice; identifying patient demographics necessary for order verification; identifying laboratory data necessary for order verification/interpretation; contacting prescribers as appropriate to confer on unclear or irregular orders; demonstrating proficiency and accuracy in the evaluation of medication orders for age specificity and complex regimens including: providing Emergency Room coverage; preparing and dispensing of medications; exercising operational and clinical expertise to cover night shift and evening shift assignments; participating in multidisciplinary rounds and collaborates with unit staff including nursing, case management, medical staff and other pharmacists; and counseling patients or caregivers on medications regarding changes, side effects, and medication or food interactions, drug indication and dosing regimens.

    This position applies knowledge of preparation of current investigational protocol drugs and performs research pharmacist as needed including oversight of drug trials that includes enrolling, randomizing, preparation, and dispensing of drug trial medications and preparing intravenous medications and documentation and maintenance of drug trial records in accordance with state and federal laws. Operational pharmacist duties include providing leadership for pharmacy operational areas, including performing utilization and cost savings initiatives for cost effective use of medications; and active utilization of pharmacy automation, involvement in and oversight of medication dispensing programs, ensuring that medication preparation, prescription filling, dispensing, and computerized systems are in accordance with established policies and procedures; precepts PharmD students and PGY1 residents on rotation; overseeing training and competency, medication safety systems, patient quality and outcomes programs, and regulatory compliance assurance. The minimum requirements for this position are a Doctor of Pharmacy degree or a Bachelor's degree in Pharmacy or Pharmaceutical Sciences degree and 3 years of experience as a pharmacist in a hospital setting; one year of postgraduate Year 1 residency (PGY1); State of Maine Pharmacist licensure and skills/abilities/proficiencies in critical care specialty pharmacy operations and regulatory compliance, including ability to manage complex critical care patients requiring extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO); catheter-based miniaturized ventricular assist device (Impella); Continuous Renal Replacement therapy (CRRT), Left ventricular assist devices (LVAD), and also managing complex Critical Care patients: septic shock, ARDS, AKI, intracerebral and subarachnoid hemorrhage, acute ischemic stroke, trauma, status epilepticus, and toxic ingestions; providing professional pharmacist support for drug trials that include enrolling, randomizing, preparation, and dispensing of drug trial medications, including the preparation of intravenous medications as the Research Pharmacist and completing required study training and inventory logs; and integrating specialty pharmacy services with quality improvement, teaching, research, and professional development activities in a hospital setting.
