  • Job Objective: A brief overview of the position.

  • Develops and delivers Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) programs within the Mission and Vision of Eisenhower Health and its Department of Spiritual Care, in collaboration with the Spiritual Care team. Teaches, supervises, conducts needs analyses, develops educational strategies, and identifies and schedules appropriate curricula and courses. The education includes oversight of the Interns/Residents within the context of their clinical assignments with patients, patients' families/loved ones, and staff

  • Qualifications

  • Education

  • Required: Master's degree in theology, divinity, religious/pastoral studies or related field

  • Licensure/Certification

  • Required: Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE) Certified Educator

  • Preferred: Certification by the Association of Professional Chaplains (APC), National Association of Catholic Chaplains (NACC), or National Association of Jewish Chaplains (NAJC), and/or the Canadian Association for Spiritual Care

  • Experience

  • Required: Three (3) years of experience providing spiritual care in a healthcare setting, preferably in a hospital

  • Preferred: Experience with building diverse and inclusive faith-based programs

  • Essential Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates compliance with Code of Conduct and compliance policies, and takes action to resolve compliance questions or concerns and report suspected violations.

  • Develops and delivers Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) programs to meet the educational needs of participants and the spiritual care needs of patients, patients' families/loved ones, and staff.

  • Identifies need for learning and facilitates all aspects of the education, determining appropriate courses/programs and materials to meet established objectives.

  • Prepares and modifies course outlines and lesson plans that are consistent with overall course objectives and participants' needs.

  • Creates and maintains education manuals, materials, and updates.

  • Assesses educational and clinical effectiveness including the supporting materials and makes revisions and changes as needed.

  • Meets individually with students to provide guidance and assistance with educational material/information.

  • Facilitates group interpersonal/professional integration seminars, case study presentation sessions, and conflict mediation.

  • As part of CPE curriculum evaluates (formally and informally) chaplain interns and residents according to ACPE Standards and Outcomes.

  • Provides 24/7 availability for consultation with team members and students on a regular basis, in rotation with other staff and/or faculty members.

  • Prepares activity and progress reports regarding educational activities.

  • Develops competency assessment tools and ensures that assessments are completed in accordance with established procedures.

  • Adheres to and facilitates adherence to ACPE Standards of Ethics, Certification, and Accreditation; collaborates with Spiritual Care Director to maintain CPE program adherence to such Standards.

  • Serves as a member of the CPE Professional Advisory Group and as a resource to its sub-committees.

  • Participates as an active and collaborative member of the Spiritual Care team.

  • Provides spiritual care to designated Eisenhower Health departments/patients as directed.

  • Trains Chaplains (including staff chaplains, volunteer chaplains, CPE interns and residents), teaching spiritual care and guidance techniques and strategies, and supporting their professional development.

  • Serves as a pastoral care education consultant for Eisenhower Health staff.

  • Consults/collaborates with the Director of Spiritual Care to integrate CPE Interns and Residents into the integrated functioning of the Eisenhower Health spiritual care delivery system.

  • In collaboration with the Director of Spiritual Care, plans, develops and implements programs to provide formal and informal spiritual care services for patients, patients' families/loved ones, staff and other health care team members.

  • Participates in the implementation of goals and improvement initiatives for spiritual care services. Recommends changes for improvement in services provided, and proposes and helps execute development of new programs.

  • When needed, facilitates service recovery processes, critical incident stress debriefings, and remembrance services for Eisenhower Health personnel.

  • Serves on hospital and Eisenhower Health committees as assigned.

  • Collaborates with the Director or Spiritual Care and Spiritual Care team in data collection and quality improvement efforts.

  • Cultural sensitivity and competence: Demonstrates proper use of communication tools/materials for effective communication and understand how the culture(s) of patient populations can affect communication, collaboration and provision of care, treatment and services. Demonstrates knowledge and proper skills associated with the department's defined specific populations served.

  • Maintains a good relationship with local clergy and leaders of faith-based entities.

  • Maintains continuing education through academic studies, seminar, and workshop experiences.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.
