Job Summary

The Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine (PVM), Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences (VCS), invites applications for a full-time (12 month) Tenure-track or Clinical-track faculty position at the Assistant, Associate or Full Professor level in Large Animal Surgery. The successful candidate will join three American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS) Diplomates in the Large Animal Surgery section, as well as three residents in training and four rotating large animal hospital interns.

The department also has five boarded large animal internal medicine specialists, two farm animal clinicians and one boarded theriogenology specialist in the Large Animal Medicine and Large Animal Emergency Critical Care sections as well as comprehensive support from anesthesiology, ophthalmology, neurology, cardiology, rehabilitation and diagnostic imaging services on large animal cases. PVM is highly supportive of individual faculty career growth and development. A formal faculty mentoring program is in place.

Qualifications

Qualifications for the position include a DVM or equivalent degree, and board certification by the ACVS or completion of a residency program registered by the ACVS. Candidates should have a sincere interest in providing outstanding clinical service, outreach, and teaching as well as participating in the discovery efforts of the department.

The clinical responsibility will be caring for all large animal species which currently consists of approximately 65% equine and 35% farm animal cases (cattle, small ruminants, swine and camelids). The successful candidate will participate in an on-call emergency service shared with other surgery faculty and staff and supported by the emergency and critical care team. Salary will be commensurate with the candidate's qualifications and experience. A background check is required for employment by the University.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will actively participate in the discovery, learning and engagement missions of the PVM and VCS department which support the overall University mission. Important activities include:

Discovery:

All faculty are expected to collaborate on clinical research projects. Tenure track faculty are expected to develop an independent research program. Research that complements the interests and strengths of current faculty is ideal but can also be tailored to the candidate's specific career goals.

Collaborative research opportunities are available within the College's other two departments (Basic Medical Sciences and Comparative Pathobiology) and within the University including the Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering, the College of Health and Human Science, the College of Agriculture and Lafayette Center for Medical Education. Clinical Service: Includes providing clinical service to patients of the Purdue Veterinary Hospital; supervising veterinary students, veterinary nursing students, and house officers; and building strong relationships with referring veterinarians.

Learning: Provide excellent clinical, didactic and laboratory instruction of veterinary students, veterinary nursing students, house officers, and graduate students. Service and Engagement: Includes participation in committee work, professional organizations, delivery of continuing education, and other applicable activities.

College and Department

The Purdue University Veterinary Hospital recently completed a major expansion project that includes the David and Bonnie Brunner Equine Hospital, a new state-of-the-art facility covering over 73,000 square feet, including an outpatient center, intensive care unit, advanced imaging (standing CT, MRI, nuclear medicine and radiology), surgical and theriogenology facilities. It also includes the David and Bonnie Brunner Farm Animal Hospital, a 24,000 square foot building offering comprehensive farm animal medical and surgical care. The new complex provides state of the art teaching facilities dedicated to educating the next generation of veterinary professionals, enabling faculty to provide top quality compassionate animal health care, and serve as a catalyst for interdisciplinary clinical research.
