The Clinical Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant job class is responsible for the performance of advanced professional nursing in a specialized field of family practice such as pediatrics, adult health, gynecology, family planning, disease control and other areas. Employees in this job class perform a variety of physical assessments and examinations of patients in order to diagnose health problems and establish treatment regimens according to medical protocol. Individuals in this class frequently interact with patients to answer questions or provide additional education on issues such as family planning, disease prevention, adolescent health, etc. Work is performed under the administrative supervision of the Health Center Administrator.

Minimum Qualifications:

Option A:

  • An active license as a Physician's Assistant by the Alabama Board of Medical Examiners

Option B:

  • Licensed as a Registered Nurse in the State of Alabama.

  • Certified Nurse Practitioner from a national certifying agency recognized by the Alabama Board of Nursing.

  • Master's degree in advanced practice nursing from an accredited program recognized by the Alabama Board of Nursing. (Individuals are exempt from this requirement if they: (1) graduated prior to 1996 from a post baccalaureate program preparing nurse practitioners; or (2) graduated prior to 1984 from a non-baccalaureate program preparing nurse practitioners).

Preferred Qualifications:

Preferred qualifications are experiences, education, and/or other job-related qualifications considered to be highly desirable by Merit System agencies.

  • Basic Life Support Certification

  • Advanced Life Support Certification

  • Experience working in ambulatory care.

  • Experience working within specialty healthcare (e.g., cardiology, oncology, urgent care).

  • Experience using outpatient electronic medical records (EMR).

Job Duties:

  • Performs routine and follow-up exams on patients by conducting medical interviews/assessments to determine their health status or potential health risks.

  • Records vital signs such as height, weight, temperature, blood pressure, pulse, and respiration and enters the information in the patient's medical record via EMS.

  • Interviews patients to determine medical history, current medications, and reason for clinic visit and performs additional tests based on assessment interview.

  • Evaluates and interprets results of diagnostic and lab tests in order to develop treatment plans; includes prescribing and administers medication or treatment to patient. May refer patients with abnormal conditions to physician or other health/social service provider.

  • Provides additional education and information to patients on issues such as family planning, disease prevention, and adolescent health in order to ensure patients understand their treatment and/or diagnosis.

  • Explains information to patient in a way he/she can understand (what is wrong, how it is caused, symptoms, preventative measures, diagnosis, treatment, next appointment time, etc.).

  • Engages in activities designed to ensure professional development, awareness of developments in the field, and knowledge of relevant practices, rules, laws, policies, and/or guidelines.

  • Salary range: $81,972 - $127,171 (starting salary is commensurate with experience)

Critical Knowledges:

  • Knowledge of professional nursing theory and practices (e.g., formulating a Plan of Care) and the laws and regulations (e.g., Nursing Standards and Practice Law, Board of Nursing Standards and Regulation, Nurse Practice Act) governing the practice of Nursing.

  • Knowledge of medical terminology and vocabulary for accurately describing the human body and associated components, conditions, and processes in a science-based manner.

  • Knowledge of policies and procedures related to patient care specific to the facility (e.g., Health Department, Jefferson County Health and Rehabilitation).

  • Knowledge of Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) guidelines.

  • Knowledge of normal standards and values for patient vital signs (i.e., blood pressure, pulse, temperature) in order to detect deviation.

  • Knowledge of prescription and non-prescription pharmaceuticals used in treatment including why they are used, their dosage amounts, shelf life, recommended length of usage, and side effects/reactions. Includes oral, intravenous, and research/experimental drugs.

  • Knowledge of the prognosis and manifestation of chronic and communicable diseases.

  • Knowledge of the appropriate set-up of different types of medical equipment based on procedure or examination being performed.

  • Knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the human body, with respect to location, structure, appearance, functions, and vital processes of internal organs.

  • Knowledge of techniques used to determine physical fitness and health (e.g., body mass index (BMI), blood pressure, cardio-vascular health, strength).

Work Environment:

Work is performed primarily within medical or healthcare facilities. Work involves use of medical tools and equipment necessary for the care and/or diagnosis of healthcare patients. May be exposed to a variety of adverse working conditions, including: exposure to bodily fluids and other bio-hazard materials (e.g., urine, sweat, saliva, blood, etc.), and exposure to contagious or infectious diseases. Job requires continuous education to maintain certification/licensure.

Physical Demands:

Job involves physical exertion required for sustained periods of light physical activity such as walking or standing. May involve occasional lifting of items or objects weighing up to 25 lbs.
