Job Summary:

Provides leadership and direction for staff to support the mission, vision and strategic plan of the hospital.

The Nurse Director is accountable and responsible for all aspects of management, including 24-hour leadership of nursing unit(s) which includes patient safety, quality of care, performance of the nursing staff, preparation and management of operational and capital budgets, orientation, and clinical development of self and staff.

Collaborates with nursing colleagues, physician leaders and ancillary departments. Participates with the Clinical Administrator/CNO in the development of department goals and decision-making activities which affect unit operations and patient care.

Provides mentorship for Clinical Staff Leaders and acts as role model of professionalism for staff. Participates as an active member of hospital committees as assigned.

Provides leadership through education, research, setting and maintaining standards of practice, mentoring and resource management. Assures development, implementation, and evaluation of programs to promote the recruitment, retention and continuing education of patient care staff.

Participates in and supports the integration of health care technology for continuity of patient care.

Accountable for oversight and implementation of quality metrics, including but not exclusive of Catheter Associated Urinary Tract Infection (CAUTI), Central Line Associated Bloodstream Infection (CLABSI) and HCAHPS.

Collaborates with Colleges of Nursing faculty to foster a positive learning environment for student clinical experiences.

Education:

Required:

Graduate of an accredited school of nursing. BSN Degree required or Health Related Degree required. .

Preferred:

Masters Degree in Nursing.

Experience:

Required:

Five or more years of clinical experience and evidence of leadership abilities, at least 3 years experience in specialty area of practice.

Position Requirement(s): License/Certification/Registration

Required:

Current license to practice nursing in the state of Tennessee. BLS completed prior to going to unit/department and to be maintained going forward.

The Nurse Licensure Compact will not change how to obtain or renew a Tennessee license. However, the Tennessee nursing license will be a single state license for Tennessee Residents or non-compact state residents. Tennessee licensure or multistate licensure from a compact state must be obtained within three months of hire for non-Tennessee residents.

Preferred:

Certification in area of specialty.

Department Position Summary:

The Nurse Director is accountable and responsible for planning, directing, organizing and evaluating clinical practice, patient care and operations of the unit. Respects diverse backgrounds, experience, knowledge and perspectives. Further, contributes to nursing and the Health System through support of philosophy and objectives and education efforts.

Quality/Safety:

Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on the unit(s).

Accountable for continuous updates to Visual Management Board.

Accountable to monitor and improve key performance metrics which include, the Exception Report, Quality Indicators, HCAHPS, and Vacancy rates.

Actively participates in committees and leads quality initiatives.

Accountable for TJC/DNV and other regulatory agency compliance.

Monitor and promote workplace safety.

Service Excellence:

Conducts at minimum daily leadership rounding.

Ensures hourly rounding by staff.

Ensures bedside shift reporting occurs at the bedside.

Responsible to manage Patient's/Family's Perception of Care through service recovery efforts.

People:

Accountable for recruitment and retention measures of the unit.

Reallocates resources and as necessary.

Conducts performance reviews; including progressive discipline, coaching and counseling.

Recognize and reward staff for exceptional performance/care.

Serves as a resource in area caring for patients with multiple medical diagnoses.

Education:

Ensures ongoing education for staff and mandatory training is completed within time limits.

Identifies educational opportunities for self and staff members.

Finance:

Accountable for productivity by appropriately flexing staffing based on census and acuity 98-100% productivity.

Ensures KRONOS timekeeping is audited, accurate and submitted timely. Enforces adherence to policy.

Monitors time and attendance and takes corrective action as per policy.

Maximize care efficiency and throughput.

Growth:

Communicates effectively with Physicians, Executive leadership and other leaders.

Community:

Assist with community outreach programs and opportunities (i.e. Health Fairs, community events, etc.).

Leadership:

Uses effective communication skills in relating to department staff and others.

Respects diversity in the workforce to foster highly effective work groups.

Adheres to ethical behavior that supports nursing standards and scopes of practice.

Role models professional behavior and fosters a healthy work environment.
