Title: Clinical Mental Health Counselor

Summary/Objective

The Clinical Mental Health Counselor reports to the Director of Counseling Services. This counselor is a working clinician who provides a wide range of counseling services for students, including scheduled individual counseling sessions and crisis/emergency counseling, group counseling and consultation with parents as needed. A key challenge will be working collaboratively on a model of service to meet the increasing demand from a diverse student population. Hours and duration of services will be determined by the Director of Counseling Services and the LMC Administration.

Essential Functions

  • Provide short term psychological counseling services and outreach to the campus community including screening and diagnostic assessment, treatment planning, individual and group therapy for diverse students and work with multiple presenting cases. These services will be presented in the counseling center office or will be offered as teletherapy.

  • Provide crisis intervention to students.

  • Assessment for suicide for students in distress.

  • Maintain confidential client files and appropriate record keeping according to professional, ethical and legal standards.

  • Design and implement psycho-educational programming on a broad range of issues.

  • Work in collaboration with teams across our campus to support student mental health programming and services.

  • Make referrals to community resources for medication evaluation and management.

  • Participate in marketing services through attendance at campus events and through social media.

  • Assist in collaboration with Residential Life, Title IX and other personnel to create programming in regard to mental health and wellness services.

  • Attend weekly staff meetings with Student Affairs and weekly staff meetings with the Counseling Center staff.

  • Attend supervision sessions if needed as required by licensing.

  • Assist Director of the Counseling Center in regard to intern training.

  • Keep current in maintaining licensure and obtaining required Continuing Education Units.

Supervisory Responsibility

This position has no supervisory responsibility.

Work Environment

Normal office environment where there is no physical discomfort due to temperature, dust, noise and the like.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday. Hours will be determined by Director of Counseling Services but will include at least 40 hours weekly of hours present in the center. At least one evening per week in the center is required.

Occasional weekend work may be required as job duties demand.

Travel

No travel is expected for this position.

Required Qualifications

Required Education, Experience and Licensing

  • Masters degree in Counseling, Social Work, or Clinical Counseling Psychology.

  • Full Licensure or ability to obtain full licensure in the State of NC including LCMHC, LCSE or LCMHCA. Supervision for LCMHCA towards hours will be provided.

  • Two plus years of clinical experience in a related role working with young adult populations.

Additional Eligibility Qualifications

  • Understanding of developmental considerations for both traditional and non-traditional students.

  • Basic to intermediate knowledge and applied experience with trauma informed care.

  • Intermediate experience with office productivity software and teletherapy protocol.

  • Specific interest in working with college student population.

  • Ability to adapt to an ever changing environment.

  • The successful candidate will be an innovative and creative clinician who is a team player and is able to assess, manage and ensure high quality mental health counseling.
