Job Title Clinical Manager, Instructional Surgical Services Job Description

This is not a tenure eligible position; the primary functions of this position are divided into two parts:

Part A: Surgical Services

  • Clinical Management

The Clinical Manager will devote 15 hours/week to arranging daily clinical assignments at all local clinical sites (currently 16 locations), including those individual contracts for one or more students in the distance education cohorts, student advisement and notification of their assignments on a daily basis, coordinating additional clinical sites, evaluating students, addressing accident/incident reports, and providing unannounced inspections to all sites as required by accreditation for programs in Surgical Services.

Part B: Surgical Services

  • Credit Course Instruction

Plan, organize, coordinate, and provide 17.5 hours/week of instruction in clinical (direct patient care), and/or simulated labs as directed by the Instructional Coordinator of Surgical Services and provide 5 hours/week to scheduled office hours

Maintain master schedule of clinical courses and ensure adequate supplies/materials are available for scheduled classes.

Contribute to curriculum assessment, planning, design, implementation, and evaluation of all educational and training objectives and program outcome measurements for each program as assigned.

Responsible for assisting with the clinical assessment, design, implementation, and evaluation of all educational and training programs including curriculum plans for the department and each program (Surgical Technologist (and embedded Central Sterile Processing Technology CCC), Surgical First Assistant, Perioperative Nursing Program, CST to CSFA, and RNFA).

Serve as the program resource (clinical site acquisition and maintenance) leader for clinical components of the curriculum.

Salary range depends on experience $$47,204 - $52,979

Essential Duties Summary

Assist with the day to day clinical operations and input of the Surgical Services programs; serve as inventory/supplies manager.

Meets with and provides guidance to students regarding clinical course requirements and state/national board preparation.

Provide oversight and ensure strong positive relationships and prompt responses to the physicians and staff at the affiliated clinical sites. Keeps Coordinator informed of issues immediately to coordinate a united response.

Answer all inquiries regarding Surgical Services whether in person, by phone or via email within 24-72 hours.

Manages and maintains database for clinical supplies and orders for each academic year. Assists with lab supplies as needed.

Obtain quotes, confer with faculty, obtain approval and submit supply orders to Senior Administrative Assistant for processing.

Supervise and provide lab and/or clinical instruction as assigned while utilizing techniques and knowledge of the discipline that facilitates student learning.

Teach assigned labs and clinical sessions on-campus and off-campus.

Provide supervision of all assigned students and/or clinical groups.

Prepare and maintain course syllabi according to program and college standards.

Maintain and revise course content based on textbook changes, edition revisions, professional standards/guideline revisions, and/or research.

Review and annually update laboratory and/or clinical assignments to ensure relevancy and current evidence based practices.

Prepare calendars and class schedules for student clinical site/service rotations.

Collaborate with other faculty to coordinate learning activities between the clinic and lab setting. Comply with course, laboratory and clinical requirements and assignments; post grades and clinical logs in a timely manner.

Organize, create, and maintain all assigned course related data such as attendance, records, grades, exams, and student evaluation of instruction.

Design and administer exams. Maintain exam banks to be congruent with published learning objectives

Demonstrate competency in computer skills (Microsoft Office Programs and Course Management Delivery Systems) for instruction and any computer skills required for the delivery of the clinical components.

Maintain current knowledge of discipline (via professional development and/or further degree attainment), educational methodologies, CAAHEP/ARCSTSA accreditation standards and college and program policies and procedures.

Facilitate and coordinate clinical documentation including student clearance, surgeon mentor clearance, clinical affiliation agreements and case documentation to ensure all requirements are met.

Keep an accurate log of all affiliation agreements, clinical sites in use and ensure accuracy regarding annual reporting.

Exhibit and uphold the values of professionalism at all times as found on the Association of Surgical Technologists and Association of Surgical First Assistants current website job description and Code of Ethics.

Comply with and demonstrate knowledge of policies contained in the most current Surgical Services Student Handbook, Health Sciences Division Policies, and Campus wide policy manuals.

Comply with mandated CAAHEP/ARCSTSA accreditation standards, core curriculum standards, and state surgical services curriculum framework.

Participate in in-services, professional growth training, seminars and workshops as they become available.

Cooperate with the Program Coordinator in conducting periodic assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of courses and program objectives (curriculum management).

Propose adjustments to course and/or clinics based on assessment outcomes.

Engage in self-evaluation activities and performance planning each academic year as defined by the Program Coordinator and/or College.

Assist with supervision, counseling and/or coordination of facility, healthcare staff, surgeons, and students. Provide academic and career advising to current and potential students and assist with management of student folders for those students as assigned.

Facilitates respectful communication and maintains open lines of communication with all students, staff of healthcare agencies, clinical agencies, faculty, management, GCSC support services, and advisory boards.

Counsel, advise, register or assist with registration for surgical services students as assigned.

Conduct conferences with students and provide written documentation for student files. Maintain current student records and advisement for surgical services student.

Counsel, refer, remediate, and tutor individual surgical services students as needed.

Meets with students, advisors, healthcare staff, and faculty on a continuous basis to seek and provide feedback, plan, guide, and/or discipline as necessary.

Facilitate, reviews and approves all clinical documentation to ensure graduation requirements are met.

Coordinates clinical site documentation, affiliation agreements, and maintains accurate logs. Provides current list of affiliates for annual reports, as necessary.

Keeps Coordinator informed of assigned program's operations and needs.

Assist with correspondence, surveys, reviews, and reports as delegated by the Program Coordinator(s).

Orient and mentor new faculty (full-time and/or adjunct)

Work as a team player within the surgical services department.

Follow up on assigned surveys to increase compliance.

Attend and assist with pinning ceremonies, graduation, student activities, and the application/testing process relevant to national board examinations.

Cooperate with the Program Coordinator(s) in conducting periodic assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of course and program objectives.

Engage in self-evaluation activities and performance planning each academic year as defined by the Programs Coordinator and/or College.

Required Qualifications

Three (3) years of Operating Room experience either in the ST/SFA role or as an instructor in Surgical First Assisting and Surgical Technology, or a combination of both, within the past five years.

3-4 years relevant experience

AA/AS degree in field or acceptable degree based on accreditation standards preferred; or must be willing to pursue and complete AA/AS degree in discipline, education or related field within 3 years of hire date.

Willing to complete continuing education in Educational Methodology.

The vision requirements include close vision, distance vision, and ability to adjust focus as well as ability to determine the color of objects.
