Position Overview

The Illinois Department of Public Health is seeking a highly motivated individual to perform the duties of Clinical Laboratory Technologist Trainee. Under direct supervision, for a period of no longer than twelve months, participates in an agency sponsored training program designed to develop knowledge, understanding and professional clinical and environmental laboratory skills used for testing specimens for biological and chemical agents related to event of terrorism, infectious disease outbreaks, and other public health emergencies.

Job Responsibilities

1.Receives comprehensive bench-side training in methods for testing of clinical specimens for food and waterborne disease outbreaks, newborn screening disorders, agents of bioterrorism, and other infectious diseases. This training includes the use of specialized laboratory equipment to ascertain the presence and/or quantity of various living organisms and/or chemical or biological substances.

2.Receives training to perform experiments on specimens in order to detect the presence of organisms or conditions using fully automated, complex analyzers.

  • Train in proper data management of patient results and notification of providers of crucial value results as appropriate.

  • Train in all laboratory quality control policies.

3.Learns to perform preventative maintenance, troubleshooting and calibration procedures related to each test performed.

  • Acquires skills necessary to implement the quality control policies and procedures of the laboratory.

  • Acquires skills required to assess and verify the validity of patient test results through the evaluation of quality sample values prior to reporting patient test results.

  • Learns to clean and calibrate sensitive scientific instruments used in the specialized area of assignment.

4.Attends lectures and/or seminars to acquire a detailed knowledge of the theories behind the clinical laboratory experiments.

  • Attends and participates in staff meetings and other training/development activities.

  • Acquires an awareness of the factors that influence test results.

5.Reviews literature and other informative materials pertinent to the duties of the position.

  • Become familiar with up-to-date information concerning new and/or unproven techniques in the laboratory field.

6.Perform other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires a Bachelor's degree in one of the chemical, biological, medical technology, clinical laboratory sciences, or physical sciences from a recognized college or university.

Conditions of Employment

  • Prior to extending an offer of employment, transcripts will be requested and evaluated to verify that awarded/conferred degree and coursework meet federal requirements for personnel performing high complexity testing under (42 CFR 493.1489).
