Performs all aspects of laboratory testing in one or more sections of laboratory.

Principal Accountabilities

  • Ensures the accuracy and timeliness of test results and/or blood products by performing quality control testing, instrument maintenance and troubleshooting.

  • Performs analytic procedures, including testing of specimens and/or blood products, reviewing results and interpreting results.

  • Performs post-analytic procedures, including result release/reporting, result correction/amendment, responding to inquiries, and specimen storage and retrieval.

  • Performs pre-analytic procedures, including test order entry, specimen collection, specimen processing and/or blood product handling.


Education/ Knowledge, including Licensure/ Certification/ Registration:

  • Baccalaureate degree in Biology or a related science required.

  • California Clinical Laboratory Scientist License required.

  • Knowledge of theory and test application of clinical chemistry, hematology/microscopy and coagulation are required.

  • Knowledge of tranfusion service and flow cytometry theory and test applications may be required if working in those areas.


  • Current experience as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist in one or more sections of the laboratory is highly desirable.

  • Experience providing laboratory testing for similar patient populations (examples include pediatric, neonatal, oncology, perinatal and cardiac) is highly desirable.

  • Experience working in a laboratory with a computerized laboratory information system is highly desirable.


  • Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment, multi-tasking and the ability to work with minimal supervision.

  • Must be able to work in a complex, fast-paced environment and take appropriate actions in challenging situations.

VIEW JOBS 2/16/2019 12:00:00 AM 2019-05-17T00:00 The Laboratory Supervisor supervises the Clinical Laboratory Scientists, Sr. Lab Assistants and/or Laboratory Assistants within the various sections and shifts of the Clinical Laboratory. Coordinates the pre-, post-and analytic phases of the laboratory workflow to consistently deliver services that meet the needs of customers. Provides technical support to the Automated Laboratory, Pulmonary Blood Gas Lab and/or Point of Care Testing Program, ensuring that high quality, cost effective diagnostic services are provided in a timely manner. Maintains technical expertise in the disciplines of Chemistry, Hematology, Microscopy, and/or Urinalysis. Maintains a working knowledge of the Laboratory Information systems (LIS). Designs workflow processes and procedures for the clinical laboratory discipline to which assigned, and creates the corresponding documents (process maps, flow charts, work instructions and forms). Maintains a working knowledge of the Laboratory Quality Management Program, coordinating activities and completing tasks to effectively manage quality and produce the desired outcomes Education / Certification / Licensure / Registration: Baccalaureate degree in biology or related field is required. A valid California Clinical Laboratory Scientist license is required. Experience: A minimum of 3 years of full-time experience as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist is required. Experience operating and maintaining Automated Laboratory analyzers is preferred. Prior experience supervising employees or providing functional guidance to employees is highly desirable. Experience in quality control, quality assurance, technical writing, method validation, project management, teaching/training is required. Demonstrated ability to supervise or guide employees and manage a section's budget is highly desirable. Knowledge: Knowledge of all aspects of the laboratory's pre-, post- and analytic processes and procedures is required. A working knowledge of Laboratory Information Systems is required. Knowledge of the concepts and application of a laboratory quality management system is required. Knowledge of regulatory and accreditation requirements is required. Special Skills/Equipment: Individual must have proven written and oral communication skills, demonstrate an ability to effectively interact with medical professionals, and supervise or guide personnel in a variety of situations by effectively applying transactional and transitional skills. Individual must also have demonstrated ability in project management, organizing, prioritizing and coordinating diverse activities in a changing environment. Individual must have the demonstrated ability to maintain the operations of the laboratory section to which assigned in a manner that meets regulatory and accreditation requirements. Individual must have the basic skills necessary to utilize and maintain a LIS. Individual must demonstrate an ability to effectively observe and identify pre-, post- and analytic process variations, and take appropriate and timely corrective action. Individual must be able to maintain the operational readiness of complex Automated Laboratory analyzers and methods through technical expertise and effective method management. Individual must be able to investigate non-conforming events, analyze for cause and create written reports that communicate a complete, clear and pertinent summary of observations or findings.
