Assists manager with scheduling and coordinating work flow and test performance. Performs laboratory procedures accurately and expeditiously.

Performs required calibrations, daily and periodic preventive maintenance and quality control (QC) procedures according to the standard operating procedure (SOP) documenting results and actions properly.

Troubleshoots and attempts to resolve problems relating to testing (e.g., QC out of range, inappropriate specimens, reagent or instrument or equipment problems). Notifies supervisor of discrepant results or problems, and completes corrective action report form as necessary.

Processes and handles specimens, ordering required tests.

Reviews quality control results and quality assurance reports, reagents, kits, anti-microbial susceptibility testing, equipment and media, and follows up on out of range results.

Performs efficiency testing and evaluation of new products or procedures, and submits a Reporting/Evaluation form within the required time frame.

Reports complaints from patients, physicians, staff or other individuals to lab section manager.

Telephones results when necessary and documents action according to SOP.

Maintains appropriate amount of supplies, and notifies supervisor as appropriate of supply problems.

Orients new employees in job specific tasks.

Attends hospital in-services and other continuing education programs.

Records receipt and labels all reagents according to SOP.

Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to neonatal, pediatric, adolescent and geriatric patients, having the ability to assess data reflective of such patients ' status, identifying each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs, and applying the principles of growth and development of such patients.

Bachelor's Degree (B.A.) from four-year college or university, and one year of training or equivalent combination of education and experience meeting state requirements or equivalent education/experience.

Licensures and Certifications:

Medical Technologist Certification - MTA Valid California Clinical Technologist license required.


Minimum 5 years of experience as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist in an acute care or trauma facility.

Skills and Knowledge:

Knowledge of laboratory test methods, specimen requirements , test limitations, test interpretations sufficient to perform tests accurately and to recognize and analyze problems effectively.

Skill in operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting laboratory instruments.

Skill in performance of manual and automated test procedures.

Skill in computer keyboard data entry/retrieval.

Skill in the recognition and analysis of problems in laboratory test performance.

Skill in establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with coworkers.

Skill in phlebotomy.

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals , technical procedures , or governmental regulations.

Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.

Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts such as exponents, logarithms, quadratic equations, and permutations.

Ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity , and analysis of variance.

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.

Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

VIEW JOBS 11/10/2019 12:00:00 AM 2020-02-08T00:00 Description: Clinical Laboratory Scientist, (includes CLS Sr., CLS, and Entry Level CLS) Under the general direction of the Laboratory Director, or their designee, performs pre-analytical, analytical and post-analytical procedures and analyses to provide data for health maintenance, diagnoses, treatment and monitoring of medical conditions. Enhances quality of patient care and service through interdepartmental cooperation and quality assurance protocols. Essential Functions: * Correctly verifies that the proper specimen is being analyzed for the correct patients and that the correct test is being performed. * Judges the adequacy and qualities of specimens submitted for testing. * Analyzes clinical laboratory specimens following the standard methods and procedures approved by the Laboratory Director or designee. * Performs quality control procedures to ensure accuracy of clinical data. * Utilizes test reference ranges (including neonates, pediatric and adult) to determine reasonableness of test results. * Validates test results through correlation with test parameters (e.g. Hgb/Hct, anion gap, platelet count/smear, dipstick/micro etc.) * Confirms testing on all Critical Values to ensure accuracy prior to releasing of test results. * Performs routine preventative maintenance and troubleshooting on assigned instruments and equipment according to established schedule and procedure. * Performs and documents instrument function by checking and calibrating specific lab instruments and documents data. * Records on instrument logs any repairs, replacement, and maintenance needed of equipment. * Releases or reports results per Laboratory Standard Operating Procedures. * Trains laboratory assistants on proper techniques/procedures related to clinical laboratory practice. * Performs other related duties as necessary.
