This roles primary responsibility includes planning, organizing and managing the overall operation of the Laboratory Department. Activities included are performance of chemical, microscopic and bacteriologic tests performed in the laboratory to obtain data for use in diagnosis and treatment of diseases.

Ensure that services are of the best quality, are cost contained and are carried out in an expeditious manner. Additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to, recognizing results or problems that require referral to the Pathologist, assuring competency of all personnel, formulating the budget for the department, maintaining performance improvement activities within the department and participating in CQI activities and maintaining efficient and effective departmental operation in compliance with all state, federal, and local regulatory laws, standards and protocols.

Essential Functions:

Work with hospital administration on planning, organizing and directing laboratory operations and ensuring compliance with all local, state and federal regulations.

Make daily rounds in Laboratory to judge effectiveness of operation, utilization of personnel and supplies, and general ethical and professional atmosphere.
Secure and maintain the physical facilities, equipment and supplies which are required to carry out effective patient care and create an optimum physical environment.
Initiate and actuate improved methods of services and direct their implementation
Prepare department budgets for personnel, operating expenses and capital equipment
Responsible for the fiscal operation of the department
Communicate appropriately and clearly to physicians, staff and administration
Consult other departments, as appropriate, to collaborate in patient care and performance improvement activities
Establish and maintain standards of performance and ensures competency and appropriate licensure of personnel
Direct and participate in the human resource management function for the department by coordinating the selection, promotion, orientation and performance appraisal processes
Coordinate the department's in-service training
Cooperate in the planning programs and safety and preparedness for fire and disaster


Bachelor of Science Degree in Medical Technology, Biology, or Chemistry
Maintains current registration with the American Society for Clinical Pathology and/or equivalent accrediting agency
Current BLS certification
Previous experience in the management of clinical laboratory of an acute care hospital
Must have experience with regulatory and accreditation of laboratory operations, preferably CLIA, CAP, and AABB
Good social skills/interpersonal skills, functions well working on a team
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, able to produce clear, concise, and logical documentation for all cases
High integrity, able to follow procedures
Ability to be a self-motivated learner, to take initiative in learning the many complex processes
Produces excellent results, is meticulous, organized and time-conscious
Exhibits professionalism at all times, understands appropriate workplace behavior/communications.

Additionally, to assist customers with their health care needs by filling prescriptions and providing excellent customer service. The incumbent is also required to perform all tasks in a safe manner consistent with corporate policies and state and federal laws. The associate is responsible for the functions below, in addition to other duties as assigned: * Ensure the accuracy and appropriateness of all prescriptions filled by completing Drug Utilization Review and Final Quality Assurance, applicable to state and federal Board of Pharmacy regulations.• Build profitable business and script growth through recommended clinical programs including appropriate immunization and when available MTM (Medication Therapy Management), DCS (Diabetes Care Specialist), and all ongoing other programs as identified.• Oversee the daily activities of the Pharmacy department.• Counsel customers with regard to medications filled at the pharmacy.• Ensure growth and profitability of Pharmacy Department.• Handle and resolve customer issues, complaints and questions to build customer trust and loyalty.• Comply with all federal and state laws and regulations.• Interact with physicians to gain additional information about customers and prescriptions to be filled.• Ensure excellent customer service by Pharmacy associates.• Maintain a clean and efficient Pharmacy department.• Provide leadership and development for associates by communicating career opportunities, providing regular performance feedback, and demonstrating RAPTAR(Recognition, Appreciation, Praise, Treat Associates Respectfully) behaviors.• Maintain appropriate security of the Pharmacy department.• Maintain reports for controlled, outdated, and recalled medications; and prescription and customer files.• Manage pharmacy inventory at acceptable levels to fulfill customer need.• Ensure compliance with all policies and procedures for controlled substance dispensing and record keeping.• Prioritize Pharmacy Department tasks and follow through to ensure all tasks are completed in a timely manner.
