Employee duties span multiple areas, including second opinion and clinical care requests, send-out testing, legal case requests, clinical trial requests for the MGH Cancer Center Protocol Office, clinical trial and research requests for the Pathology Specimen Locator in conjunction with the Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center, internal pathology department-related research requests, IRB/CITI training and, of course, tissue preservation through automated and manual archiving of blocks and slides.

Follows all safety (including infection control and hazardous material) policies and procedures. Notifies supervisor of unsafe conditions.

Provide compassionate and professional care to all patients using reasonable and prudent judgment

Interact with co-workers, management and vendors in a professional manner.

Attend all annually required safety and infection control education and competency activities

Achieve productivity expectations where applicable

Respect department and MGH property. Maintain neat and orderly work area.

Secure all areas and equipment such as coolers, supplies and PHI (Protected Health Information) when not in use

Adhere to all security policies and procedures

Adhere to all HIPAA and other privacy requirements and regulations.

Follow all established and approved policies and procedures for assigned work area.

Communicate and inform unit management of any and all deviations from acceptable practice, policy and procedure and exercise reasonable and prudent judgment at all times.

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.

  • Previous science, medical terminology education, healthcare and/or customer service experience preferred.

  • Experience with computers, including Microsoft Windows software.

The Clinical Laboratory Assistant performs a variety of clerical and technical duties under general supervision. Reports to a Laboratory Supervisor or Manager. Responsibilities include receipt, accessioning, centrifugation and decanting of patient specimens, and communicating with clinicians at the Front Window and over the phone. PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Indicate key areas of responsibility, major job duties, special projects and key objectives for this position. These items should be evaluated throughout the year and included in the written annual evaluation. Greets and assists visitors to the Front Window. Sorts and prioritizes samples that arrive at the Front Window and the pneumatic tube system. Receives patient specimens: o Retrieves electronic orders by scanning bar-coded specimens, verify information in the system matches the labels, and update collection date/time, if necessary. Accessions patient specimens: o Accurately enters information from requisition (including patient name, unit number, requesting area, time sample drawn, physician's name, tubes received, tests requested, general comments) into computer. o Affixes bar-coded labels to requisition and tubes. Operate automated pre-analytic sample processing instrumentation Transfers samples from racks to centrifuges and decant station. Decants and sorts specimens. Responds to telephone inquiries regarding patient test results and related information as part of the general laboratory workflow. Processes add-on requests: o Locates sample, add tests to the accession, and responds to electronic request from the provider. Faxes reports as requested per lab protocol. May pre-process specimens for testing. Sorts and files any requisitions. Follows department Cancel, Credit, Refuse protocols. Assists laboratory management with special projects relating to Front Office operations as assigned. Maintains safe and clean working environment. QUALIFICATIONS: (MUST be realistic, neither overstated nor understated, and related to the essential functions of the job.) High School Diploma or equivalent. Previous laboratory, healthcare or customer service experience preferred. Experience with computers, including Microsoft Windows software.
