Job Summary

The Nursing Quality, Research, and Innovation department represents nursing across the Michigan Health System to improve nursing procedures and processes to provide better care to our patients, retain good standing with the Joint Commission, and continue our Magnet journal by providing excellent patient care.

One of Nursing Quality, Research and Innovation's responsibilities is leading data acquisition for nursing services. This available position is key in transforming care captured by nurses into meaningful information. There is close partnership with the front line staff, nursing leaders, nursing informatics, information technology, and other multidisciplinary leaders to create accurate and reliable reports for quality improvement purposes. These reports are utilized across the organization.

Quality improvement data is also submitted externally for benchmarking purposes. This department retains responsibility for coordinating all efforts with that agency. More areas, departments, and metrics will be added in the coming year.

Another important aspect of this role in interacting with front line staff around evidence-based strategies to decrease healthcare associated infections. The person in this role will observe nursing practice and provide feedback. Additionally, chart audits examining and capturing practice will be conducted by the person in this role. Our customers are nurses and multidisciplinary leaders across the health system.

This position's main responsibilities are to validate data being utilized for reports, organize and coordinate data submitted to an external benchmark, perform chart audits and observations to examine nursing care, and be a resource for leaders throughout the organization who are doing quality improvement work.

Other responsibilities may include:

  • Performing chart audits and collecting data from patient records or through direct observation

  • Gathering and interpreting data to identify opportunities to improve the quality of care in both the inpatient and outpatient settings

  • Lead problem-solving efforts to ensure data is accurate

  • Submit data to external benchmarks in a timely manner to ensure deadlines are met

  • Possessing and applying a comprehensive knowledge of measurement to the completion of complex assignments

  • Building quality improvement data collection tools and reports

  • Serving on governance committees related to quality improvement and documentation

  • Projects as delegated

Required Qualifications*

  • BS degree in a healthcare or analytic field

  • 3 years' experience analyzing/interpreting process, clinical outcomes or cost of care

  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational and problem-solving skills highly desired

Desired Qualifications*

  • Valid MI RN License

  • Must be a team player with demonstrated ability to work well with others

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Experience with the National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators (NDNQI) preferred

  • Experience with the Magnet recognition program preferred

  • Demonstrated experience in survey methodology and analysis in research or industry setting preferably related to healthcare

  • Skills in using database or other software tools to pull and prepare data for reporting desired

  • Experience with SAS, SPSS, STATA or other statistical software packages

  • Experience with Epic

Hours: 40 hours

Conducts regular review of data for quality assurance and to assess trends and identify areas for improvement and possible action. 20% Synthesizes and analyzes large quantities of data and information to create succinct communications that influence decision-making and inform broad audiences.
