Rutgers University Behavioral Health Care (UBHC), established in 1971, offers a full continuum of evidence based behavioral health and addiction services for children, adolescents, adults, and seniors throughout New Jersey. UBHC's 1,060 experienced behavioral health professionals and support staff are dedicated to treatment, prevention, and education. UBHC, one of the largest providers of behavioral health care in the country, has a budget of $260 million and has 15 sites throughout New Jersey. Services are readily accessible and include: inpatient, outpatient, partial hospitalization, screening, crisis stabilization, family/caregiver support, community outreach and case management, supportive housing, supported employment, prevention and consultation, employee assistance programs, and a licensed therapeutic school from preschool through high school. Specialty services include the New Jersey suicide prevention helpline and peer help lines for police, veterans, active military, teachers, mothers of special needs children and child protective service workers. In FY2016, UBHC treated 16,199 consumers, had 24,502 admissions, and touched the lives of 19,441 individual callers through peer support. In addition, UBHC is the primary mental health training resource for the New Jersey departments of Human Services, Children and Families, and Corrections, delivering 16,000 trainings each year.

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Clinical Fellow in Speech Language Pathology for the Child & Adolescent Services

  • Education Department within Rutgers University Behavioral Health Care.

The primary purpose of the Clinicial Fellow in Speech Lanaguage Pathology, as a one-year trainee under the direction of the Speech and Language Therapist, is to provide comprehensive speech, language and literacy assessment and intervention services to children and young adults ages 4-21 years of age diagnosed with a complex constellation of speech/language deficits secondary to psychiatric disorders as well as emotional and behavioral disturbances. Serves as a member of interdisciplinary treatment teams on the unit

Among the key duties of this position are the following:

  • Provides speech/language instruction to children (4 -21 years) with empathy and concern.

  • Plans appropriate speech/language/literacy interventions based on diagnostic information (as per S/L testing).

  • Executes educationally appropriate curriculum and behavior management interventions for speech/language improvement.

  • Responds with sensitivity to cultural and socio-economic issues of clients.

  • Assumes responsibility as speech/language specialist for assigned patient/students including coordination of the Individual Education Plan with the over-all treatment plan.

  • Collaborates effectively with other staff members in providing interdisciplinary team treatment to children/adolescents.

  • Completes speech/language progress notes within prescribed time-frame as indicated by regular view of records.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Masters' Degree in Speech/Language Pathology from an accredited university.

Certifications/Licenses

  • Must obtain a New Jersey State Speech/Language Specialist certification during your one (1) year fellowship program.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with emotionally disturbed children or adolescents is strongly preferred.

Equipment Utilized Physical Demands and Work Environment

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Employee must be physically active, able to move within program space and participate in physical education and recreational activities as assigned.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Environment includes working on multiple floors of facility and working in an active milieu with children. Occasional off-site activities with patient/students may be required.
