SUBFUNCTION DEFINITION: Involves the fields of healthcare technology management (systems engineering, biomedical engineering, regulatory compliance, new technology assessment and deployment). Includes technology selection, device integration, interfacing with IT security, infrastructure and networks and biomedical equipment services (inventory and maintenance of equipment). Applies a broad scope of diagnostic, therapeutic, and equipment maintenance technologies used in the delivery of patient care.

May provide technical support during highly instrumented medical procedures. Provides consultation, instruction and / or technical direction for medical, nursing and other paramedical staff in the safe use of biomedical equipment.

REPRESENTATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES

Assessment/Analysis

Perform equipment incident investigations and participate in corresponding Root Cause Analysis (RCA). Perform Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF) malfunction trend analysis, make recommendations for equipment replacement, and recommendations for Planned Maintenance (PM) criteria. Apply human factor engineering principles to equipment evaluation process and provide appropriate recommendations.

Evaluate new equipment (both hardware and disposables) and new technology from a design, modification, and usage perspective. As part of a Vendor Quality Assurance effort, evaluates vendor competencies and examines product history. Review equipment alerts/recalls and coordinates with CE Supervisors and the CE Coordinator to address all appropriate actions. Performs Failure Modes and Effects Analyses (FMEA) on equipment and processes, as needed.

Operations Management

Assist in developing and implementing consistent policies and procedures which guide and support the goals and objectives of the department. Advise and participate in ad hoc committees on medical equipment issues, as assigned.

Coordinate technical resources and scheduling for various projects, equipment installations/conversions, and/or upgrades. Performs any other duties, as assigned.

Equipment & Database Analysis

Acquire and interpret maintenance data to determine operational status of equipment and equipment eligibility to be included in the Alternative Equipment Maintenance (AEM) plan. Assist in the evaluating/updating of the five-year Capital Equipment Replacement Plan.

Monitor and communicate compliance with specifications, codes, and hospital standards. Coordinate the evaluation of new, modified and/or proposed equipment in conjunction with the CE Supervisors. Provide input to the CE Database covering design and development.

Coordinate with the database application developers/designers and database user group within the CE department. Recommend reports used to analyze MTBF, AEM inclusion/exclusion, Could not Duplicate (CND) failure trends, and overall equipment safety/failure trends. Analyze data generated from the reports to set priorities and expedite operations and repairs. Recommend equipment replacement based on life cycle criteria and technology advancements.

Leadership & Safety

Act as a mentor to the bio/biomedical engineering co-op student(s). Support and enforce departmental and CCHMC policies. Provide leadership to the department regarding technical issues and regulatory requirements.

Understand, adhere to and model Core Standards within the department and organizational Core Values. Enhances organizational performance by recommending areas or approaches for improvement activities, performing new procedures, collecting data, and providing input to department discussions. Ensure that work areas are organized and provide a safe, accessible, effective and efficient environment for employees, patients and families.

Act immediately when attention is brought to any unsafe conditions or practices witnessed or identified. Attend and mange student completion of required CCHMC training sessions, including MRI safety, radiation safety, laboratory safety, Safety College, and OSHA. Maintain compliance with all Infection Control policies and procedures is mandatory.

Communication & Collaboration

As assigned, actively participate in various CCHMC committees covering equipment related issues. Maintain knowledge of new and current trends in health care equipment and technologies.

Participate in continuing education and training to constantly update technical and personal skills. Interface daily with Purchasing, Patient Services, and other Clinical/Lab/Research areas to effectively manage the medical equipment inventory. Acts as a CE consultant for the Equipment & Standards Committee, Risk Management and on other special projects, as assigned. Performs quality assurance reviews of the PM process and any corresponding PM procedures.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or related discipline
  • 2 - 5 years of work experience in a related job discipline

Preferred:

  • Master's degree in Clinical Engineering OR enrolled in a Clinical Engineer Master's degree program
  • ACCE Certification OR candidate for ACCE Certification
