ABOUT THE POSITION

  • Medical Center is seeking a Clinical Director of Nursing Services II for our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and Perinatal Services.

The incumbent will be responsible for directing the activities and resources of the Perinatal department and NICU nursing units in partnership with the Executive Director, physicians, medical staff, and others to resolve operational challenges and/or to improve processes, along with providing strategic vision for growth and expansion of women's and children's service line. Additionally, the incumbent will work with the Executive Director and senior leadership to develop and establish short- and long-term strategic plans that complement system, operating unit or affiliate goals, and initiatives, including business operations, and/or organizational priorities. Candidates with acute hospital experience in a leadership role in women's services (Perinatal and/or NICU) and a MSN are encouraged to apply.

Department Information:

Our 32-bed, Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit provides the backdrop to the high-touch, high-tech, high-quality care our nurses pride themselves on delivering to sick babies from 23 weeks gestational age and up. We have a dedicated neonatologist or neonatal nurse practitioner in-house 24/7.

With only a door to separate us from the Labor and Delivery unit and operating rooms, our Advanced Response and Resuscitation Team is able to intervene quickly during complicated births. We value our active, collegial, and timely collaboration between physicians and front-line health care providers. As an academic medical center, our NICU team contributes to research and learning through participation in multi-center collaboratives, frequent drills with high-fidelity simulation equipment on the unit, and staff-led counsels. Ours is a culture that encourages questions, applauds teamwork, values learning and believes the family is the center of the plan for all the care we provide.

The birthing center consists of (12) LDR (Labor, Delivery, Recovery) Rooms, (2) OB Operating Rooms. A (35) bed Post-Partum Unit and a well-baby nursery. We care for a variety of patients, many with high-risk health problems in conjunction to pregnancy, C-Sections and tubal ligations are done on the unit within our OB Operating Rooms.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Develop, implement, and revise departmental goals, policies and procedures, department specific performance improvement objectives, and patient safety and reliability programs; determine the appropriate organizational structure, staffing patterns, and nursing methods and operations necessary to ensure delivery of quality and safe patient care and efficient delivery of patient services.

  • Provide leadership in the coordination and implementation of nursing educational programs; ensure survey-readiness and compliance with standards of Joint Commission, federal and state regulatory agencies, as well as with organization-wide benchmark criteria; evaluate and initiate corrective action regarding operational compliance with licensure, accreditation, and regulatory standards.

  • Participate in strategic planning for the organization and nursing services; align departmental goals and objectives with the mission, vision, and values of organization; participate in planned orientation and in-service training programs to explain hospital policies and organization and to demonstrate nursing procedures and practices; act as a resource to medical and administrative staff, other county departments, the community and external regulatory agencies on issues related to department nursing and/or integrated care services.

  • Directly and through supervisory staff, select, assign, and direct the work of subordinates; review employee progress and efficiency reports, discuss findings and evaluations with supervisors and managers; make recommendations and implement as required; assign and reassign personnel to provide adequate unit staffing.

  • Make periodic inspection rounds of all units to evaluate the quality of patient care and operations; investigate complaints regarding patient care and staff.

  • Conduct regular staff meetings to advise and guide managers and supervisors in administrative and personnel matters and in interpreting and enforcing hospital policies, rules, regulations, and procedures.

  • Prepare and maintain reports of nursing services or integrated care services and activities; gather and compile budget data; direct the preparation of budgets for assigned area, integrate with organizational budgets, and ensure accountability for budget and personnel resource requests.

  • Attend, participate in, and conduct staff meetings, committee meetings, and conferences; attend professional meetings to represent the department.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree, preferably with a major in nursing, nursing administration, or a closely related field to the assignment. (Additional qualifying experience may substitute for up to two years of the required education on the basis of one year of full-time experience equaling 30 semester or 45 quarter units of the required education.)

Experience: Four years as a registered nurse at an accredited acute care hospital, which must have included three years of nurse supervisory experience. (A master's degree from an accredited college or university in nursing or nursing administration may substitute for one year of the required non- supervisory experience.)

Knowledge of: The principles of nursing administration and organization, business, and personnel administration; modern principles, methods and procedures of nursing; principles and techniques of effective supervision and staff utilization; quality, patient safety and performance improvement programs, peer review and legal aspects of care; uses and effects of medicines and narcotics; principles and techniques of effective supervision, management, and administration; Joint Commission, federal and state regulations related to emergency department nursing services in an acute care hospital.

Ability to: Clearly and effectively communicate verbally and in writing with staff and the public; plan, organize, direct, coordinate and review the activities of operating room/perioperative nursing services; supervise, instruct, motivate, monitor, train and evaluate professional and nonprofessional employees; plan for future needs of nursing services in terms of personnel, equipment and supplies; recommend improvements in nursing operations consistent with current nursing trends; establish and maintain systems of records and reports; establish and maintain cooperative relationships with staff and the public.
