JOB SUMMARY/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, this position provides chairside assistance, clinical/laboratory support, and facilities maintenance for residents and faculty members in the Department of Periodontology. Summarily, this position is responsible for nitrous monitoring, coronal polishing, and applying sealants.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assists operator at the dental chair; arranges instruments, materials, and medications on prepared tray and aids dental operator (dental student/faculty).
Provides chairside assistance to the Dental Hygienist. Seats and prepares patient for treatment.
Clears operating area during procedures by use of suction devices, water sprays, cotton rolls and holders, and by retraction of cheek/tongue.
Prepares and/or mixes impression materials.
Takes impressions of patients' teeth for study casts; creates and trims provisional restorations; cleans excess cement following clinical luting procedures.
Provides assistance with clinical photographic procedures. Take diagnostic radiographs including cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans when appropriate.
Cleans working area by disinfecting/sterilizing instruments and equipment.
Receives/processes/accesses patient records; makes entries of procedures, materials used, amount of time involved, amount of charges, etc.
Ensures the comfort of patients before, during, and after dental treatment.
Ensures patients understand instructions for oral care following surgery or other dental treatment procedures and teach patients appropriate oral hygiene strategies to maintain oral health (tooth brushing, flossing and nutritional counseling).
Participates in infection control by helping to establish and carry out infection control protocol.
Ensures working area, instruments, and equipment meets OSHA sterilization regulations; performs preventive equipment maintenance and routine maintenance.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
EDUCATION: High school diploma or GED. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED)
EXPERIENCE: One (1) year experience working in a dental office or dental laboratory. Must have Dental Assistant licensure as required the State of Tennessee Board of Dentistry. (Verification is Required). Nitrous oxide monitoring and radiology certification is required. Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) Dental Assisting National Board (DANB) certification preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Ability to interact with patients, doctors, and staff in a positive and effective manner.
Knowledge of procedure codes and patient billing.
Ability to work on a team.
Strong communication skills and good hand dexterity.
Proficient computer skills in patient management software (i.e. AXIUM).
LICENSE/CERTIFICATION: Certification as a registered dental assistant (RDA) in the State of Tennessee, with certification in radiology and nitrous oxide monitoring is required. CDA (DANB) certification preferred. (PROOF OF LICENSURE IS REQUIRED)
WORK SCHEDULE: This position may occasionally work weekends.
