JOB SUMMARY/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, this position provides chairside assistance, clinical/laboratory support, and facilities maintenance for residents and faculty members in the Department of Periodontology. Summarily, this position is responsible for nitrous monitoring, coronal polishing, and applying sealants.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assists operator at the dental chair; arranges instruments, materials, and medications on prepared tray and aids dental operator (dental student/faculty).

  • Provides chairside assistance to the Dental Hygienist. Seats and prepares patient for treatment.

  • Clears operating area during procedures by use of suction devices, water sprays, cotton rolls and holders, and by retraction of cheek/tongue.

  • Prepares and/or mixes impression materials.

  • Takes impressions of patients' teeth for study casts; creates and trims provisional restorations; cleans excess cement following clinical luting procedures.

  • Provides assistance with clinical photographic procedures. Take diagnostic radiographs including cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans when appropriate.

  • Cleans working area by disinfecting/sterilizing instruments and equipment.

  • Receives/processes/accesses patient records; makes entries of procedures, materials used, amount of time involved, amount of charges, etc.

  • Ensures the comfort of patients before, during, and after dental treatment.

  • Ensures patients understand instructions for oral care following surgery or other dental treatment procedures and teach patients appropriate oral hygiene strategies to maintain oral health (tooth brushing, flossing and nutritional counseling).

  • Participates in infection control by helping to establish and carry out infection control protocol.

  • Ensures working area, instruments, and equipment meets OSHA sterilization regulations; performs preventive equipment maintenance and routine maintenance.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION: High school diploma or GED. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED)

EXPERIENCE: One (1) year experience working in a dental office or dental laboratory. Must have Dental Assistant licensure as required the State of Tennessee Board of Dentistry. (Verification is Required). Nitrous oxide monitoring and radiology certification is required. Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) Dental Assisting National Board (DANB) certification preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to interact with patients, doctors, and staff in a positive and effective manner.

  • Knowledge of procedure codes and patient billing.

  • Ability to work on a team.

  • Strong communication skills and good hand dexterity.

  • Proficient computer skills in patient management software (i.e. AXIUM).

LICENSE/CERTIFICATION: Certification as a registered dental assistant (RDA) in the State of Tennessee, with certification in radiology and nitrous oxide monitoring is required. CDA (DANB) certification preferred. (PROOF OF LICENSURE IS REQUIRED)

WORK SCHEDULE: This position may occasionally work weekends.

VIEW JOBS 8/6/2019 12:00:00 AM 2019-11-04T00:00 Pay Grade: 34 Salary Rate: $15.09/Hourly JOB SUMMARY/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Under the direction of the CDE Director/Program Administrator, this position is responsible for the on-boarding of new applicants for the continuing dental education Expanded Functions Dental Assistant (EFDA) course, maintaining current waiting list database, ordering supplies, receiving orders, keeping accurate inventory of all items for the course, cleaning instruments for the course, preparing dental kits and learning materials/handouts for the course. Serves as an assistant in the course under the direction of the CE course director, when demonstrations are needed and assist in grading of exams. Assists in all other CE courses, answering calls, emails inquiries, and other CE and/or College of Dentistry events. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Maintains stock and loads all supplies, instruments, hand pieces, motors, etc. 2. Cleans and sets up room for classes. 3. Assists instructor on any demonstrations pertaining to properly placing a rubber dam, litigating properly, packing material into teeth, filling a restoration, achieving good anatomy in the restoration, identifying areas to determine restoration success, and finishing and polishing restorations. 4. Ensures students sign in daily and fills out emergency contact information. 5. Prepares and disperses comp teeth after tests. Organizes finished comp teeth. 6. Tracks re dos each student has taken on each tooth. 7. Assists students clean their stations. 8. Returns curing lights and water bottles; re-loads and organizes supplies; wipes down counters. 9. Maintains filing system. Prepares documents, receives/sends emails, maintains Excel database. 10. Addresses any equipment problems and contact responsible personnel. 11. Assists with registration for all CE courses. 12. Handles telephone and email inquiries pertaining to CE courses. 13. Performs other related duties as assigned.
