Position Purpose:

A Registered Nurse serving as a clinical role model and supervisor of assigned unit within Surgical Services. Accepts twenty-four hour responsibility for these units. Accountable to the Director of Surgical Services for the nursing management of the assigned unit, the supervisor maintains a positive clinical environment ensuring delivery of quality care for surgical services patients, promoting cohesiveness within the department and the hospital. He/She demonstrates ethical and appropriate clinical behavior, and a leadership style augmenting that of the Director. Reports to the Surgical Services Director.

Supervision:

• Responsible for compliance with overall nursing practice standards of the specialty area (Reports to Department Director)

• Responsible for compliance with standards during assigned shift (Reports to House Supervisor)

• Uses established principles of delegation and supervision to direct the activities of all licensed and non-licensed care givers and support staff in the delivery of patient care during their assigned shift

• Uses independent judgment to ensure optimal delivery of patient care and appropriate use of available resources
