BASIC FUNCTION:

Ensures the smooth, efficient operation of the hematology/coagulation laboratory at the Downtown Medical Center. Performs general clinical laboratory analyses on biological specimens to provide information used in the diagnosis, prevention or treatment of disease. Many of these procedures involve numerous highly complex tests and techniques that require the use of professional judgment. This position will have responsibility for leading other laboratory professionals and continuously interacting and consulting with section management and other allied health care professionals.

JOB RELATIONSHIPS:

General supervision is received from Lab Manager and Laboratory Director. Functional supervision is exercised over professional, technical and student employees.

TASK STATEMENTS:

1.Perform quantitative and qualitative analyses on clinical specimens.

2.Serve as the technical expert for patient test result interpretation, specific tasks, work processes and procedures performed in hematology and coagulation section.

3.Communicate and disseminate general information and policy or procedure changes to unit/shift personnel.

4.Plan, prioritize and direct work activities to ensure smooth and efficient operation.

5.Investigate and resolve problems concerning patient testing and procedures.

6.Assist with interviewing and selecting new staff.

7.Provide leadership for discipline-specific work groups.

8.Participate in the design and implementation of new procedures and instrumentation.

9.Monitor equipment performance, diagnose instrument problems/malfunctions and make repairs or initiate service requests.



  1. Monitor quality control, quality assurance and proficiency testing; implement corrective actions for effective testing.

  2. Coordinate and participate in continuing education activities and events.

  3. Monitor employee compliance with approved regulatory and departmental guidelines.

  4. Assist in developing the strategic goals and objectives for the section.

  5. Develop, implement and evaluate training programs for staff

  6. Assist with the development of competency assessment tools.

  7. Conduct competency assessment for staff.

  8. Collaborate with other UIHC departmental committees, vendors and external health care professionals.

  9. Participate in the review, revision and implementation of standard operating procedures.

  10. Participate in the evaluation of work processes to enhance operational efficiencies, increase productivity and decrease costs.

  11. Provide oversight of inventory and supply management.

  12. Perform additional tasks as may be assigned by manager.


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

1.A Bachelor's degree in a chemical, biological, clinical laboratory science or medical technology program from an accredited college/university, or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.

2.Reasonable (1 - 3 years) clinical laboratory experience within the past five (5) years is required.

3.Certification as Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), or specialist certification in appropriate laboratory discipline from American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or certification as a Medical Technologist (MT) from Health Education and Welfare (HEW) is required.

4.Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.

1.Experience with validation and implementation of new testing or instruments.

2.Experience with laboratory inspection and accreditation activities.

3.Experience working in an academic health center.

4.Knowledge of and applied experience working with collective bargaining work rules.

5.Experience with personnel, team, or project management.

6.Experience developing and delivering laboratory sciences-based technical training.

7.Experience working with total laboratory automation.

8.Experience working with middleware.

9.Excellent documentation skills.
