Fiscal Year 2023-2024 Position Summary

This position is for a full time Clinical Assistant/ Associate Professor position. The purpose of the Clinical Social Worker position is to serve in the Department of Oral Diagnostic Sciences and as a member of the inter-professional team in the Orofacial Pain and TMD Clinic. The Clinical Social Worker will participate in the design, implementation and evaluation of the Social Work - Dentist Model which is an innovative, integrated care approach to treat patients with Orofacial Pain conditions. The social worker will be involved in psychosocial assessment, supportive limited counseling, behavioral intervention in person and/or via telehealth, discharge planning, and referral, and participation in multidisciplinary treatment team.

Functions:

  • Develop, implement, and evaluate the addition of social work services and interventions for patient care in the Orofacial Pain Clinic, addressing barriers and complexities of oral health care for vulnerable and underserved populations, including, but not limited to behavioral health needs, and complex psychosocial issues.

  • Educate postdoctoral students and faculty to assess and include biopsychosocial domains of health in clinical care.

  • Collaborate with UB School of Social Work and its Field Education Program to maintain the field placement site for social work student(s); providing direct supervision and coordination.

  • Participate in project team meetings and activities, including curriculum development for postdoctoral education.

  • Develop and deliver proper courses for the structured teaching of the pertinent behavioral health curricula in the field.

  • Collaborate with project team members on dissemination activities including presentations at relevant dental and social work conferences and manuscript submissions for publication.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's degree in social work from a Council on Social Work Education accredited school of social work.

  • Current licensure as Licensed Master Level Social Worker (LMSW) to practice in NYS.

  • Minimum 2-3 years post-MSW direct practice experience.

  • Professional training in assessment and response in suicidal ideation and self-injurious behaviors.

  • Professional training in supporting patients with chronic pain and mental health conditions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Doctoral degree in social work or a related or equivalent.

  • Experience as a clinical or didactic, graduate-level educator.

  • Experience of behavioral assessment and treatment planning in previous roles in an Orofacial Pain clinic.

  • Experience of behavioral assessment and treatment planning in behavioral interventions and health-wellness coaching.

  • Active involvement in social work and behavioral health dentistry professional organizations.

  • Current collaborations within social work and behavioral health dentistry.

  • Evidence of behavioral assessment and treatment planning in pervious roles applied in dental settings.

  • Clinical teaching or precepting experience in medical and/or dental settings.

  • Demonstrates knowledge, skills and attitudes for effective collaborative practice, inter-professional communication, and team-based care.
