Job Summary:

To provide veterinary care for a variety of laboratory animal and agricultural animals through disease prevention, clinical care, health monitoring, and quality assurance measures. This position reports to the Director of Animal Resources/University Attending Veterinarian. Responsibilities include:

  • Providing clinical veterinary care to a myriad of animal species ;

  • Providing emergency care afterhours, weekends, and holidays on a rotating basis;

  • Conducting health assessment rounds for animals housed in the University's decentralized animal facilities;

  • Planning and implementation of preventative medicine programs;

  • Assisting with the coordination of care provided to University owned animals by other veterinarians;

  • Participating in IACUC activities including meeting attendance, protocol review, facility inspections, and program reviews as needed;

  • Serving on the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) as needed;

  • Assisting with management of the University's animal care program (Animal Resources);

  • Assisting in the preparation and review of standard operating procedures and disaster plans for the University's decentralized animal care program;

  • Training researchers and animal care staff in animal handling, sample collection techniques, compound administration, anesthesia, surgery, regulatory compliance, etc.;

  • Assisting with teaching comparative medicine to veterinary students in a didactic elective course;

  • Conducting veterinary consultations pertaining to animal care and use protocols (ACUPs), (e.g., assisting investigators with animal model selection, study design, protocol development, etc.);

  • Assisting the University in maintaining compliance with all applicable animal welfare regulations;

  • Assisting colleges with maintaining and/or obtaining AAALAC accreditation;

  • Managing the rodent quarantine and health surveillance programs in consultation with the University's Attending Veterinarian;

  • Conducting collaborative research; and

  • Performing other duties as assigned.

Education & Experience

Position Qualifications:

Required Qualifications:

Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine (DVM or VMD) from an AVMA-accredited veterinary college, Oklahoma veterinary licensure or the ability to obtain an Oklahoma veterinary license within 3 months of employment.

Minimum of two years of post-graduate clinical experience with laboratory animal species in a biomedical research setting, or similar, is required, while formal postdoctoral training in laboratory animal medicine and/or ACLAM board eligibility is preferred.

Must possess a valid driver's license for travel between sites.

Must have strong self-motivation and an interest to engage in and foster collaborations with scientific investigators.

Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of veterinary medicine, specifically laboratory animal and agricultural species.

Thorough knowledge of all rules, regulations, policies and guidelines relating to the use of research animals in both biomedical and agricultural settings.

Eligibility for veterinary licensure in the state of Oklahoma.

Ability to pass a medical evaluation, which includes receiving medical clearance to wear/use a variety of respiratory protection devices and personal protective equipment (PPE).

Must successfully complete background checks and be eligible for employment in areas governed by the U. S. Patriot Act and the Public Health and Bioterrorism Preparedness and Response Act of 2002, 42 CFR 73, 7 CFR 331, and 9 CFR 121.

Consequently, the individual must successfully complete a Department of Justice/Federal Bureau of Investigation (DOJ/FBI) security risk assessment (SRA).

Proficient computer skills, which includes MS Suite applications and database applications, and high level of organizational skills.

Solid interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate effectively and positively with a diverse audience of professionals.

Skills to read, interpret and author complex documents such as research protocols, regulations, and policies.

Preferred Qualifications:

A Master of Science or PhD in biological sciences preferred.

Completion of an ACLAM-approved residency is preferred.

Experience working with agricultural animals and wildlife. ACLAM board certification or eligibility preferred.

Biocontainment experience, ABSL3.
